Default Body panels

I have a 1998 Trans Am. I heard that some of the exterior body panels are plastic and some are metal. Is this true ? If so, which ones are metal ? Thanks.

The rear quarter panels, head light covers, stock hood, doors, and A-pillar are metal. The rest of the body is plastic.

The doors are plastic. As stated above, the only exterior panels that aren't plastic are the rear quarters and the hood on base-model 'birds (like mine)

Even Corvettes are plastic now. None of the Big 3 use fiberglass anymore.

I'm pretty certain the doors are metal. When I replaced my window motor I noticed the bare metal on the inside, and the outside of the doors in the interior of the car are fiberglass. (drilled hole for larger bolt, fiberglass "dust" went every where.)

Your all wrong..lol

The doors, rear hatch, roof cap, hood-if SS or WS6 equiped are all made from SMC "Sheet moulding compound". It has simmilar appearance to fiberglass but is entirely different, GM hasnt used fiberglass in years. The fenders are plastic, I believe TPO to be exact and the rear quarters and headlight doors are steel as well as the hoods on all non SS or WS6 equiped cars.

SMC: "A fiberglass reinforced thermosetting compound manufactured by dispersing long stands (>1”) of chopped glass fibers on a bath of polyester resin. The longer glass fibers in SMC result in better strength properties than standard BMC products."
Containing the glass fibers may explain the "fiberglass dust/threads" which were exposed from the hole I drilled on the interior of the door. I have yet to understand the "sheet metal" appearance/feel on the inside of the door if the composition of the doors is entirely of SMS, unless is it is used as a reinforcement, or part an inside "Shell"? The following article specifies where GM used SMC for the body panels on f-bodys.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...28/ai_12660271
SMC scored major victories with General Motors Corp.'s APV minivans in 1989 and Chrysler Corp.'s Dodge Viper last year. The trend continues this year with GM's new F-body Pontiac Firebird/Chevy Camaro sports cars, which feature a unique plastic-and-steel-body hybrid. Due out in early 1993, over 90% of the car is new, including an SMC roof, doors and rear hatch.
So, you are correct about the doors being neither plastic nor metal.

For those interested, I found another good article, though it's from 1994 (pdf):
