Broke the rear end and now 4L60e has problems???
Went to the track a couple of weeks ago and broke several teeth off the ring gear about 60 feet off the line and pulled to a stop with loud clanking sound. Trailered the car to the shop, changed the gears, started the car up and discovered the tranny has issues.
It will go into reverse and will go into 1st and 2nd gears when shifted in those gears manually, but will free rev when put into D or OD (even at a dead stop). Fluid looks good and have checked the shifter linkage position. No SES codes. Motor slightly flares when I move the shifter from OD to Nuetral like something in the trans is trying to work. This is a 2002 Camaro and the trans is a Rock-On Level 4 4L60e that has worked flawlessly for the past year.
Any thoughts on why the trans would go into 1st when put into 1st, but free rev when put into D or OD at a stop? Can't think of anything else to check and can't get ahold of Rock-On??? TIA

We did the same thing a few years back. We blew the stock Torsen posi and got it swapped out and beefed up. Then we come to find out the tranny had Input drum clutch and sprag problems.
This woman driver can sure tear some s$#t up.lol.
She hasn't tore the Rossler and 12 bolt up yet though..... give her time

Had to break out a gear train/hydrualic chart. You would be 100% correct. I missread the post earlier and made a mistake diagnosing this issue. Good call.

I appreciate all the help! It sounds like it is going to be an expensive repair. Am I better off buying a new tranny or just having this one rebuilt? The things that broke don't really sound like normal replacement items as part of a rebuild???

I would not recommend buying a new unit for a minor failure. And yes, it is not abnormal to see the one way rollers break... thats why there are heavy duty units on the market... most likely the folks who built your unit used the Borg Warner one way roller, if so you just ripped the snot out of yours when the axle let go... not uncommon at all. You might need new races as well but it should not be a major repair if you have described the condition accurately. But hey... anyone would be guessing until they dissasembled it and thoroughly inspected it.

Depends on the shop or wether your doing it yourself , it might be relativley inexpensive to fix in some shops but not many , Reason is most shops in order to warranty the trans will insist on and do a complete rebuilt in order to warranty it , If the will warranty a performance unit at all , Personally I think that provided you can install it yourself or have someone help you cheaply that you would probably be better off just getting a built unit.

I had my trans fixed by a very competent trans shop ,he fixed what needed fixing an charged me 350.Now if it was in worse condition he probably would of had to rebuild the whole thing costing more.Try to find a good tranny shop from local drag racers, it might help!!!

Got the trans fixed and it did turn out to be the sprag. Took the trans to Ace Racing Transmission in North Richland Hills and the guys there really took care of me. As I understand it, when you have a sudden drivetrain stop/jolt from the rear end breakage, it can cause this one way roller bearing to break. Wasn't too expensive of repair and they installed a heavier duty sprag than the one that Rock-On had used. The trans is shifting perfectly, couldn't be happier with the service I received from these guys! Major props to Ace Racing Transmissions!
