Not blown, just used and deteriorating. A blown one will have a part of that metal ring really thin and have heat scortches on it. I am wonderin why they are all covered in oil..

Thats how I took them off the car. the oil smells like it has gas in it as well. The car shut off one night and was very hard to crank back up. It also blows white smoke constantly out of the exhaust. I thought I just blew a head gasket and was it. My temp guage doesnt work but i have never had a problem with over heating. I have a meizere E-water pump. And it was still running after the car died.(straight wire to switch). Im at a loss here about what could be wrong. The pistons look great along with the cylinder walls. Do you think it could be the rings??? What do you you think?

White smoke is Anti-freeze, so you did the right thing as far as taking them off and checking them. Oil would be blueish smoke. Gas in the oil is probably cause them Head Gaskets are so old. That is why it is burning coolant, but not alot of it. Put some new ones in and you will be good.

thats good to hear. I mean those are the factory head gaskets and Ive been spraying the crap out of them. Also I noticed when I took off my X-pipe to drop the headers I had a small exhaust leak and what looked like to be some sort of fluid has been burning out of the hole. So that must be coolant. It all makes sense. And my fellings arent hurt b/c ive had a set of heads and a cam to put in Ive just been lazy and didnt want to do it. But this just give me a chanve to do it.

I blew a Head Gasket cause I was running lean, and the EGR was mal-functioning cause of the Hot Cam and how we had it tuned. I removed the EGR, and that took care of it.

head gaskest are like fuses, they dont really blow for no reason. I have seen in a couple engine building books how to identify what went wrong by looking at the damage on the gasket.

That one was just old, and he was hitting it with N20. Old wear+N20=broken parts.

Mine looked about that shot when I pulled my heads off, except I did it cause I did blow the gasket. The back of the metal ring was seperated in two, on cyl #7. My hypertech 160 thermostat failed closed one night while I was out runway racing.

That cool though that you have more upgrades your forced to do now, I know what its like having parts laying around that don't get installed and then something goes wrong. Its always nice to get two things accomplished at once.

On my stock motor, the head gasket blew after about 9K miles on 6psi. I was racing a mustang down the interstate, looked in the rearview to see where he was and saw nothing but a big white cloud

When the heads were removed I found coolant in the cylinders of the drivers side bank. That gasket was obviously blown by hot temps causing the ring to melt in a small area. (Detonation? or just boost with old gaskets I dont know)

The pass side (the one that didnt blow) looked like both of yours. Old, deteriorated, and probably ready to start leaking.
