Default What's the difference between LQ4 and LQ9.....

blocks? Anything? My casting number is 12551364 and from what I have found, it could be either one of them? Is one stronger than the other? Will LQ9 or LS7 heads bolt up with the proper intake?

Somewhere around the LQ4-LQ9 transition the heads
went from sand cast to pressure cast aluminum. Early
LQ4 I think saw iron heads too but that was way back.
I don't know as the heads' characteristics changed any
between casting methods, within the aluminum family.
Probably get a lot more info off the truck site.

Well, what I'm trying to find out is what heads/intake in particular will work on my block. So the difference between the LQ4-9 is the heads only, nothing with the block? I was thinking of using Patriot Performance cnc LQ9 heads. I can't seem to find a better deal for ported cylinder heads that flow like theydo for the price.

well for example the newer lsx motors have bigger channels, thus allowing for better cooling of the block....

a newer 5.3 would be a good bet for you....03+ or better....port the heads and through in a cam....get rid of the stock rims for weight...and do a good exhaust....should be fine

I already have the 6.0L block. It's cast iron, not aluminum. It's ok tho, because for what I plan on doing with the block, I'd rather have iron over alum. anyways.

Here are the differences from the LQ4 and the LQ9 ... the pistons! The LQ4 has dished pistons which equate to 9.5 Static CR, the LQ9 have flat top pistons which equate to 10.4 Static CR. The heads from 1999-2000 6.0L are Iron heads, from 2001 and newer they have been the 317 aluminum heads. Any head designed for a 4.00" bore will work on either the LQ4 or LQ9, heck GM even used the LS6 heads (243) on the early LS2 (aluminum version of the LQ9 sort of). The LQ4 was available on most light/medium duty trucks and SUVs, the LQ9 was used on Denalis, Escalades and Silverado SSs. All of the 6.0L blocks are the same, even the part/casting number.

Sweet!! Sounds like the sky's the limit pretty much then. Would the LS7 heads/intake combo work with it? Would it be worth it to go with those heads/intake versus the LSX 90mm and ported LQ9 heads?

If you already have the LS7 heads/intake, then sure ... if not, take a look at the LS2-LS7-L92-L76 section, they discuss the option of using the L92 heads (similar to LS7 heads, but cost less) and an L76 intake. And yes, this setup would be better then the LSX/ported 317s ... but it is all relative to what your plans are?

I'm looking for 500+ rwhp on 93 pump gas and 9:1 compression. I will be using a 4L80E trans that will be fortified and have the proper stall converter for it as well. I figure 4.005 bore and 4.00 stroke......402 cubes should get the job done. My block only has 20K miles. The crosshatching is intact in all 8 cylinders. All of the cam/main bearings look nice too. I got really lucky on this block for $50......lol. Later on, I'll be using a Procharger D1-SC @ 8-10psi for 700+ rwhp.
