I am in the same predicament. I am getting ready to forge my 98 but I am not sure if I will want to re-use my old block. I am trying to keep the costs down as well. I have though about just getting a 6.0L iron block and calling it a day but dont know if I want that extra weight.

You can look at some of my posts on my build.I machined and build my stock 98 block with forged stuff and now Im running 14psi on a Mid frame turbo with some nitrous from time to time.I dunno what power Im making but enough to beat 1000cc bikes and run just ahead of a formula with 779 rwhp

the block isnt a problem and really neither is the crank, just use good rods , bolts and pistons.

I put 250 + passes, most in the 9s, 12-14psi on a 98 block, stock connecting rods w/arp bolts and ported 98 heads with stock valves and even graphite head gaskets. Engine is still running fine in a n/a head/cam car.

Keep it safe with a good tune and I doubt you will have any problems, guys that are hurting blocks are making a ton of power or have bad tunes. I have seen the later blocks split cylinders as well as the early blocks so I'm sure its possible to get a 'bad' one no matter what the year.

Mine is doing fine so far, Im only running 8 psi and dynoed 500RWHP through the unlocked 4l60. I built the motor to run 14-15 psi, but ATI sent the wrong pulley with the kit. I have a smaller pulley to put on, I just have to find time to put it on and get back to the dyno to retune. Click the link in my sig for details.
