What Kind Of Tuning After Cam Install
Hi, What would be the cheapest tuning route can I go after putting this cam to my 99 ls1? the specs of the cam is 218/228, .558/.558,116 lsa. I know alot of people would say handheld tuner is no good, but i might have to get a used handheld and go that route since I'm on tight budget,so please help with any info

thats not a very big cam, and on a 116 lsa the idle should be pretty smooth. you will probably be able to get away driving it without a tune, but to get everything out of the cam, and better gas milage, you would need a good dyno tune.

dont get a handheld tuner considering it wont do much for what your asking.....as stated before this is a small cam with no thump....you usually can get a street tune for about 200 bucks....WHICH with that cam is exactly what you need.....you dont even need a dyno tune

With a little cam like that do a "self tune".
I forget the exact process IIRC, you disconnect the battery, you pull a certain fuse under hood (PCM I think), reconnect the battery, turn the ign on, turn it off, put the fuse back in and start the car and it will learn your new cam.
Do a relearn search. I might have the process all mixed up.

Don't expect amazing results just by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. The computer will gradually adjust to your new A/F mixture. Just remember, with a cheap tune, you usually get what you pay for. If you do go with a handheld tuner then don't get the Hypertech, complete garbage IMO.

Don't get a cam until you can afford a real dyno tune, around $400-500. Also, combine other mods with the tune, so you only have to do a tune one time. I would get all exhaust mods and intake mods done before getting a cam, then get a cam, then get a tune.
Btw you might want to research more on which cam to run before you put what looks like a hotcam in your car...most people (including me) would advise against it. There are better options if you want to go smaller and better options, if you want to go the other way.
The only handheld tuner that is OK for cam tunes is the Vincci Programmer...but that cost as much as a dyno tune anyway so forget it and get a tune.
