Default Rear Diff. Flush?

Ok i called my local chevy stealership and call to see how much it was it get the rear diff. fiuld changed. They told me $65 for labor plus fiulds. I didnt think this was that bad, but he said that the fiuld was synthetic and that it was $30 a bottle, and i have to have 3 bottles? Then i asked him if it had to have limited slip additive, and he said no because it was sythetic. Is this true? And where can i get this fiuld cheaper? Thanks

Also, i had my car on a lift to fix an exhaust leak, and i noticed to leaks, both where oil. One was coming from around the oil pan it looked like, and the other was from around the rear diff. area. What could this be?

P.S. There not bad oil leaks, i always check the drive way for oil spots and never have any, I also have been keeping on eye on the oil level a lot, and it nevers get low.

Save your self time and money and do it your self. Just pull the cover, let all the old drain out then reinstall with new gasket. Last time I did mine I believe it held 2 quarts of 80w90 gear oil, and one small thing of the GM slip additive. I think I got that at Advance auto parts. No problems here and Ive done it this way for years.

The oil on the rear, is the dreaded pinion seal leak. The 10 bolts are notrious for this. Ive replaced mine 2-3 times and it will always leak. Ive even had it done by some one and it still leaked.

The oil on the pan, could be the rear main seal, rear cover gasket or the oil pan gasket. Best thing to do on that is try and trace down exactly where its coming from...

Do the fluid change yourself. If ya wanna trace the oil leaks use some dye in the motor.

for sure you dont need 3 quarts of fluid for the rear end i've done it it olds just about two complete quarts and you dont have to run synthetic either just remember to get the limited slip additive from gm its like 4 dollars

For a '99 Camaro, is it necessary to get the limited slip additive or can you just do a change with 2 quarts of 75W-90 synthetic? I plan to do a change this winter and want to know for sure.

I just went to Advance tonight and the only Redline fluid they carry anymore is Water Wetter. Tards.

So I went to the local NAPA and they ordered me 2qts of 75w-90 Redline gear oil and 4qts of Redline D4ATF for my T56. We'll see what happens. Got the diff. gasket, RTV sealant, and fluid pump at Advanced too.

Do you have a local NAPA parts store? They might be able to order you something like my local store does if you don't want to settle for Mobil 1.

Is it ok to buy the rear main seal, and ring and pinion seal at autozone? Or are those the kind of seals that you NEED to buy from the dealership??

I've used synthetic, regular and even royal purple on my rear diff... no difference at all for either of my 10 bolts. I have the same posi in both cars, SLP torsen and have never noticed the rusty screw sound on turns on either car so I've never put in the slip additive either.

The pinion seal leak is all too common, you get a few years on it but a good season of driveline shock, launches etc will cause it to leak again.

Not that it matters much since I consider the 10 bolt a driveline grenade in the works, but I think the reg fluid due to it's thicker nature may absorb the shock a bit more than a thinner synthetic. Then again it is a grenade so I don't think it'll really make that much of a difference.

i usually do royal purple 75 140....its a little thicker synthetic...for 99+ you do not need the additive...also get a gasket for the rear and a filler tube to load the fluid in adn some rtv.... now would be a ggod time to add a cool rear end cover

I'd use dino 80/90. Maybe $5.00 a bottle. The LSA is a few dollars too. No gasket, just use a bead of black silicone around the cover. Total cost should be less than $15. lol

Well i just went to the chevy dealership today. I went ahead and got them to put in a new ring and pinion seal, and while they were doing that, they let the fluid drain out, and they put in new fluid with the LSD additive, and they only charged me for putting in the seal, so by getting that fixed, i got a free rear end fluid change. I bought my own fluid from autozone and I got Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90. It was like 8.99 a bottle. The only down side was they couldnt drain all of it through the pinoin seal, they drained what they could and they but 1 bottle + LSD additive. So half of it was changed. All together parts labor and tax was like $170. So it wasnt that bad.
