check the oil running or cold? the search function is not working.
I have an LS2 ENG Do I check the engine oil while the car is running or cold?
How do you check the engine oil of the LS1 also?

Only auto trans fluid should be checked with the engine running (also trans must be warm). Engine oil should be checked with the engine off.

Actual oil level on Dip stick?.. see pic inside Every time I check my oil I always wondered how much was acually in it. Is it the highest point on the stick that there is any trace of Oil or is the measurment the last bit of oil that crosses the width of the dipstick? Please post if you think oil level one or two in the picture is the right measuring spot of the oil. Also do LS2's hold more or less Oil than a LS1. What are the consequences of 1 or 2 more quarts of OIL? How many people here have a drop or two comming from the rear main?

on mine it shows that the top of the crosshairs is full and the bottom is add.
the oil "streaked" on the above part is from it splashing to the top of the dip stick, and/or from the stick sliding in the spout when taking it out.

I also thought the streaking part was from rubbing on something or splashing but when I thought about it more I started to think that it was the actual oil level because if it did rub on something it would rub the oil off and cause the streak.

seawolf i couldnt help but notice you were from yankton. I was born and grew up there untill last year and moved to NC for racing.
Anyways yeah I check mine when its cold or when all the oil is drained back to the pan or else your going to read low and will end up overfilling it and overfilling an engine is worse for it then underfilling it.

well true oil level would be straight across the dipstick, not half way verticle. the verticle streak must be from rubbing. maaybe the side of the pan, or the tube.

Okay, with 5 qts my dipstick is in the middle of the hash area, with 5.5 it is clost to the top, with 6 qts it is directly in the middle of the line on the arrow (represented by *) <---*--
That "streak" is not accurate, wipe the dipstick off and you should have a streak that looks like this (X=oil) XXXXX\ THe oil will be at a 45* angle or so, but no crazy LONG streak like what you displayed.
I add 6qts with a regular filter as per Patman's recommendation.

I can totally believe there are so many asking how to check the oil these days because you don't check the oil the same way these days, Now Camaros have a Sump in them and pump the oil into the engines and it doesn't all sit in the oil pan, and the dipstick reading will not work unless the engine is hot, and turned off for 1 minute before you check. Done any other way and you get wild readings (down 2 quarts or over filled). Forget everything you think you know about checking oil on these cars today. Not a good comment to say you can't believe there are so many, but it seemed good but not applicable now. Now, you can see why people are asking these questions.

While it may be silly to us, someone just getting into the automotive scene might not know, had parents not automobile savvy, or just not know the basics of automotive care. I would much rather have someone ask a question like this then assume the wrong thing and have thousands of dollars in repairs.
