Default true duals vs y pipe/catback

are there any real gains when going with true duals compared to a y pipe and a catback?

Yes, scavenging with a good xpipe.

You will gain more midrange tq over a ypipe setup. Here is my graph from switching from the stock ypipe to true duals, I picked up 20 lb/ft of midrange tq:

True Duals will always have more tq than a comparable ypipe.

I would say duals come into effect more as your supporting mods grow, i.e. cam, heads, intake etc. And it all depends on what type of cat-back you're contemplating.
