Default Tach Install Question

I'm trying to settle an argument.

Do you need this http://autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=99 to install a tach on an LS1 F-Body to have an after market tach like an Auto meter Monster tach work and or read accurately?

If not how do you do it with out it?
