anyone build a 5.3 for a car??
everyone might think i am stupid but, i originally was going to build a 402 with l92 heads and such, but i have decided to put more money in the chassis and get it ready for a big horsepower motor.
so i bought a complete 5.3 from a friend extremely cheap. and planned on putting some prc 5.3 heads and a pretty large cam in it. car is pretty well race only so im not really worried about streetablitly.
my question is has anyone on here used a 5.3 shortblock??? and what kind of power did they make?? any advise?? if i can get it to put about 400 to the wheels i will be happy. dont say scrap the 5.3 cause this is just a temp. motor to get me by. the chassis this is going in has about a 28-- lbs race weight with me in it.
im guessing a magic stick or something of that nature is too big for a 325 inch motor?? anyone tried anything bigger than a 230 or so duration???

I swear by them for my engine swaps... but I'm not modding them too much. I was going to add a turbo ala the Wheel to Wheel setup on my LM7 SUpra, but ran out of room underhood. The complete 5.3 was $400 at a local junkyard.
For my RX7 swap, I picked up a 20K mile 2005 L33 (all aluminum motor w/ LS6 heads & 310 HP) for $800. I'm planning to add a better cam (it is a truck motor & the car will weigh a lot less) with matching springs.
The least I've seen a complete 100K mile LS1 go for was around $1600 or so, usually more like $2000.

not ran it at the track yet but here is my setup
98ta
03 lm7
ported 706 heads
cometic -030 headgaskets
04ls6 cam and springs
and all your basic bolt ons
if it makes 340-350 to the tire ill be happy...
\car weighs about 3100 give or take a lil..
and all kinds of nitrous...
I picked mine up for 450 had 30000 miles on it...came home sold the harness and pcm for 200...so i have 250 in a low mileage shortblock...
just playing around with it here at the house it feels really strong...

Running a bone stock 5.3 with an ls1 intake in my car with longtubes as the only bolt on really, aside from the trans anyway. Converted from a v6 this past winter. Put down 271/306. Ls6 intake, cam, and springs this upcoming winter. Hoping for 300 to the wheels.

you should make more than 300...hell ive seen trucks put 350 to the tire with some tiny *** cams....the ls6 cam is good for around 40rwhp in a 5.3 if that tells you anything...but 271 with headers as your only mod sounds about right....
