Default Mail Order or Dyno?

hey guys i was thinking about getting a tune, i know its best to get a dyno tune, but i dont really have the money for a dyno tune, so i was thinking about getting a mail order tune for my '94 chevy 1500 pickup, its got a 5.7 350 and no its not vortec. so wat do you think would be the best thing on a limited budget? save up and get a dyno tune or just get a mail order tune, also how much does a dyno tune cost?? i live in springhill, louisiana, and its pretty close to shreveport if anybody knows of a place there, so please let me know, thanks

Save the money, put the cam in, then get it tuned on the dyno!

Save and get a dyno tune, or you may completely ruin your engine as far as killing the rings go. Just like what happened to my 1 month old 436 stroker, did a mail order tune and washed the rings. It needed to be rebuilt or deal with burning 2 qrts of oil every 200-300 miles.

Maybe it's because I'm in the business, but I am continually astounded as to how much most are willing to spend on bolt ons/ins with questionable results, yet how little most want to spend on a good tune that helps the bolt ons/ins work together and gives results and reliability. I think tuners are the world's worst mechandisers.

Cost varies dramatically for different parts of the country, knowledge, experiance and level of tuning equipment. Ballpark - $450 to $650.

It's definately better to get a dyno tune. But if you don't have the money for it right now or in the near future, a mail order tune should get you close. But get a tune from a reputable company that has been around the block more than twice. It also depends what mods are done and will be done for them to tune. If you just have a few things here and there I would go mail order for right now, then get a dyno tune as soon as money allows it. If you are gonna poke and stroke, and spray with a big nasty cam then I would say wait until you can get it on a dyno!!!

'94 chevy 1500 pickup, its got a 5.7 350

That vechicle's PCM uses a replaceable eprom chip. You will need to find a shop that can burn OBD1 eproms whether you go with mail order or dyno tune.

Just telling you that not all shops that do late model tuning have the equipment to edit your PCM. Has nothing to do with whether it is a dyno tune or mail order.

Look for an Eprom programmer, then search the internet. There is actually some free software available, but it is something you will have to research on your own. I don't remember the links, but even if I did, they are not a sponsor.
