Default Cam w/o headers

Just out of curiousity, would it be worth it to put a small cam, dont know much about them but one you cant notice being other than stock, with lid/cutout? And with a 3600 stall and dr's could i see mid 12 ET's or better? I was just wondering because i figured this would appear pretty much stock except minor bolt ons which is what i want, but i figured it should run well. I know everyone says no cam before headers, but just thought i'd ask about this combo, thanks.

I've heard a lot of talk about the cheaTR cam! It is supposed to work well with the stock exhaust set up and still put out some pretty good power numbers, while still sounding stock. Something to look into im sure if you do a search on this cam you will find some info on it i've heard it discussed a few times here recently!

Thanks guys. Yea i thought about the z06 cam but figured i should just get a better performing one if i were to do it. And yes i also know im leavin a lot on the table without full exhaust, it was just a thought, but i like the sleeper idea. There are plenty of faster cars around here so i know with my budget i wont ever be the fastest so i should do what i can afford.

with sticky tires and a stall you should be able to get close to clicking off a mid 12..with good driving and good conditions.

Here is a thread from a guy earlier in the year that had an ET in the low 12's even before the Cheatr Cam. He had basic bolt-ons and a 3600 stall (did have headers thru a catted Y). My guess is even without the headers it would still be a mid to low 12 sec car. He added the Cheatr cam and went 11.77 @ 114 with a 1.70 60ft.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485325

The best thing us A4 guys can have is a good effecient stall to get those 60's down. So it is possible, even without the Cheatr
I hope to get my Cheatr cam in with a good set of heads sometime after the first of the year.

Another vote for the TR cheatr cam. You wont reach full potential without supporting mods but you will still see an improvement. Or the infamous TR224, best all around off the shelf cam on the planet.

IMHO Headers and lid/cutout > Cam and lid/cutout
The stock cam will work better with headers than a cam and no headers.
1.7 rockers are an easy secret install!
I think there is no reason to install parts that are not supported by the rest of the components.
The point being that the cast exhaust manifolds are a restriction.

If you want to appear stock, then mufful to sound stock!
.02 keep the change

You will definitely need a set of headers for a nice size cam, and why not used pacesetters are found pretty cheap so whats the point in not getting any? Your cam will be fighting to get the air out of the stock manifold which will make you lose power so the cam will not show much gain til a set of headers is bought. Unless its like a Z06 cam or something like that with a small lift and duration.

CheaTR cam.. designed for stock manifolds.. not going to get choked out due to the large split with the high exhaust duration.

There are a few cams out there for use with stock manifolds...the CheaTR is very good/popular. I was looking at getting the Lingenfelter GT2-3 or similar for myself, but I figured I would tire of a small cam and stock manifolds quickly, so I decided to go a little bigger and get the headers.

Yes you can get a cam w/o the exhaust..BUT why? The exhuast WILL be needed to take full advantage of your cam. What about heads? You going to be happy with 12's?? NO. What performance car doesnt run 12's now. You will need a good set of heads, a good cam, good exhaust and good stall and tune to be COMPETITIVE these days. Dont lie to yourself and say 12's will be ok for me, theyre not. You get used to power FASTER than our ability to buy it. 10 sec daily drivers are the norm now.
