Cool Who runs a T56 with BIG power??

I want to road race my car and am curious as to how well a built T56 handles the power of turbo cars. I have over 800 rwhp. Would you recommend just staying with my T400/10" Niel chance converter?? Or would I be happy with a swap to a manual? So far I love the auto, but it is not to great for road racing with the limited gear selection and freewheel 1st, and 2nd gears. I also like my Trans brake that I would be giving up.

My main concern is swapping to a manual only to find out it breaks constantly and is too hard to drive under boost. What are your thoughts and experience???

I was consistenly stripping the teeth off of the input shaft gear and countershaft gear on the stock T56's once I got over 800rwtq. (this was from rolling onto the gas in 3rd on the street).

I now run a G-force and have had no problems. (it will take anything you can throw at it). I also run a McLeod street twin clutch which holds the power but needs to be freshened up every year or two depending on how much you slip it at the track.

Can you tell more about the G-Force trans??

I would also REALLY like to try the standing mile thing, but the T400 mind give me a minor problem with tat 1:1 3rd gear ratio.

I would imagine this was at full weight too, correct? 3800lbs?

Im running a stock T56, so far so good. I beat on it on the street mostly, it has seen the track more then a few times though. I just try to take it easy on teh shifts, no power shifting or anything.

I would say, try the Viper version. Bigger input shaft.

The gears and cluster in a viper tranny is no stronger than what comes in an f-body/ GTO/Vette, only the output shaft is stronger. Full throttle upshifts would be easier on GTO/ Vette syncros as opposed to f-body. The Vette/GTO has twice as many blocker rings as does an f-body t56. The blocker rings are what slow the gears down to enable smooth upshifts and down shifts. The Vette/GTO t56 has more of them so therfore it will shift quicker and is easier to powershift. I have quite a few customers that make big power on t56s, it all depends how you appily that power. On a 800whp road race car you more than likely will not have a problem. Most of the problem comes when you put a big slick on the car and drag race it. I have seen gears break and rip the teeth off of the cluster and inputshaft at 350whp and have also seen t56 with 1000whp last for 2 to 3 years of powershifting abuse.

isnt powershifting that actually hurts the tranny or is that a myth?

So, as long as you upgrade the input shaft you should be fine?? What is all involved with upgrading it, besides the shaft itself? Can you add blocker rings to the F-body T56 trans, then, to quicken/ease the shifts up?

So whats the hp rating on the T56?

I know drive train components fit into the mix, but at least a guesstimation.

As far as I am aware, the input shaft isnt a problem. Its the 27T output shaft that is weak on the F-bodies, hance they go to a 30T viper OP shaft.

My stock T56 has coped amazingly well with everything Ive thrown at it, andits in perfect condition.

Ive opted for a cryod T56 package from Amber & Joe. The G-Force was on the cards....but at the money, apparently some are breaking them too.
Given my usage, and how my current T56 is working....I didnt think the G-Force was worth the extra.

Hopefully I wont be proven wrong.

Anyone try the different 5-6 gear ratios to have a "real" 6 speed at the track?? I heard someone makes them.

Im going for the shorter 5th and 6th gears....tremec make them lol
A friend has them in his Viper.

Cant think of too many tracks I'd use them at though, as 4th will just about take me to 150+ as it is. It will when I fit a taller diff.

Should hopefully assist me in the standing mile, or aiming for a possible 200mph.

Current 6th is a little tall for anything other than economy cruising, although it is still very useable.

Some nice ratio combos for the T56.
Would a TKO be a better choice?

I only managed 187.8, although my belt jumped, and ended up with a missfire for the last 9secs or so of the run. The belt did stay on, but it was slipping after it jumped.

Im sure it will do 190+, cant see the 200 happening. Aerodynamics are killing me.

That was with me in 5th gear at around 6300/6400rpm. I'd be in a better position, if I was hitting 190 around 5800-6000rpm I think if there was any chance of the 200 coming.

Im on a 3.55 diff, now, but will be swapping to a 3.27.
