What exactly are 5.3L heads?

5.3l heads decreases the amount of volume, thus cubes and overall potential but increases the compression ratio translating into more internal stress. This looks like a less than ideal way to improve performance. Wouldn't it make more sense to get head that has more volumetric effenciency by flowing better?

i've been wondering the same thing. why guys use ls6 heads or 5.3 heads. is there a sticky or write up about all the different types of heads for the ls1 motor or different ones you can use and why you would use them?

5.3L heads definitely don't decrease displacement, as that's determined by the bore and stroke of an engine. As far as flow, from what I've seen a ported 5.3 head flows within 5cfm of a ported ls6 head at .600 lift. The reason people choose these heads is for the increased compression (which can also be acheived by milling the ls6 head), and the smaller ports. I.E. a 5.3 head may have a 220cc intake vs. 227-230+ for the ls6. This keeps velocity up which helps with low to mid range power. So for most street or mild type combo's this head will probably be more favorable than the ls6. So in summary I don't think you can say one head is better than the other, it's about matching the head to your combo in order to meet your specific goals. I'm by no means an expert on this subject so if you want enough reading material to keep you busy for days check out the internal section.
