Default Dump the LS1 for a Mach1??? Need insights

well, i have a cousin who currently owns a nice 99 ws6 who is thinking about trading his car in for a 2003 yellow mach 1. He tells me that he wants to trade it in to the ford dealership becuase his tranny is going out and feels like his rear end is about to go, so he wants to get rid of it before it breaks down permanately...anyways, wondering what you guys think of the mustang MACH 1's???? Any encounters with them guys? hes getting the mach 1 for 18,500 and has 10K miles on it... I think he should just get another f body, but he can do this deal right now.

his car, his choice.

f-body vs mach 1, stock v stock, f-body has the edge.. not too big but it's there. I think they look pretty nice, sound great.. but being a small dispacement OHC motor, there's not as much potential as an f-body once modded.

he'll probably attract more tail in a mustang.

sounds like a damn good deal. thats one of the nicest mustangs...theres no problem switching from a ls1 to a mach 1 or terminator IMO. but i think the LS1 has so much more potential then the mach 1

If hes getting such a good deal and if the problems with his WS6 are really happening, tell him to try the Mach. Of course no one here wants to see somebody cross the line and get a Ford, but the Machs are very powerful and good looking cars imo.

Mach=more refined engine, lot shittier tranny, better rear end, crappy suspension.

Its just a trade-off. The LS1 has more ultimate potential. All that said, get the Mach, thats a good deal imho.

Modular motors are very expensive to modify if you go the N/A route.

LS1 has more potential and is easier to work on, and modify in my opinion.

There is more of an aftermarket for the LS1 aswell.

Its a tough one but i would go LS1..

depends on what his plans are... i love mach 1's and thats a steal for that car, if he plans on putting cams in the mach, it will hit his pocket book, i heard its real expensive to do a cam swap... mach 1's are fast, and look awesome, now i hate fords but i think i could deal with a blue oval if it was a mach 1,i was looking for a mach 1 or cobra when i went to buy a car... but then there was the camaro, test drive= love

Going from an LS1 to a Mach or Termie is all good. If you are looking to stay stock or go with just intake and exhaust, a mach is an excellent car that looks right and sounds excellent. Stay the hell away from the auto Machs though...

The auto machs are castrated from the factory, they redline 1000 rpm lower, not good on a 4V Modular. Plus they have nasty throttle delay and have a cast crank instead of a forged one, there may be more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. In the case of the mach, 5-speed > auto IMO.

i walked one pretty good from a 40mph roll....i have 2.73 gears and i run 13.5 consistantly....you dont wanna go from an ls1 to a mach1!!! if it was a terminator, i'd wanna trade too, but mach 1's just dont impress me very much

That may be a good deal for a Mach 1, but I wouldn't go from an LS1 to a Mach 1. They run decently, but I know I raced one when I first got my car and put a couple lengths on it pretty easily. I think he should go with another LS1. But it is going to be his car, so if he really likes them then I don't think it would be a mistake.

hmm.. If he is trading it in and then him still paying 18K is crazy in my opinion. I traded my 99 Cobra for a 03 Cobra and only owed 17K for the 03 I bought. Got rid of that for my Z. More $$$ saved! I like my Z.

Mach I's are nice cars for sure, about equal with the LS1 performance wise. But I still think they are kind of bland (not that F-bods aren't, but I like my car more than a Mach). I can vouch for Lucas' run in with one about a year ago, it was when he first had his car and shifted slow . (Doesn't shift slow anymore! ). Anyway I don't think you should sell a problem in the 1st place, but way to many people do it anyway, but if he wants the Mach I then go for it, but I bet he'll regret it. Although they do sound great, the other guy had a point, Mod motors are expensive to mod.

Depends what he's looking for in a car. He's already owned a WS6, so if he decides to buy the Mach 1 after a carefully weighing his options I think he'll have a good idea of what he's getting himself into. The Mach 1 is an awesome car. Stock for stock it'll hang right with an LS1, and they sound amazing. Some people also prefer the look of the Mustangs to F-bodies. Mach 1s are also much more rare.

If he plans to modify extensively make sure he knows that he'll end up spending much more. If he plans to stay close to stock, then the Mach 1 isn't a bad buy (imo.)
