Exclamation newbie here, help me out please?

hey guys im kinda of new to the fundamentals of cams and how they work, all i know is that the bigger they are the more power you get and the louder the car.

but hered a question i hope someone can answer for me, because im always confused about cams....

ok, im tryin to find out "whats the best cam for my stock 1998 ls1, WITHOUT changing the heads?"

like everyone here im trying to get more horsepower and torque but still keep it street and gas friendly even though its hard to do 99% of the time, AND find a cam that i jus wanna put in without having to change the heads.

also, im wondering what else i need to get done when i want a cam installed?

i know that i want a computer tune but thas pretty much all i know

if anyone could help me answer my question, id greatly appreciate it

thanks, ryan

TREX cam, available from Thunder Racing, is what you want.

That and a shift key, some grammar courses, valvespring kit to match the cam, and a timing chain upgrade.

the "best" will be subjective. listen to different sound clips to find one that you like.

the best isnt always the biggest, i highly doubt he has any supporting mods. I would not recomend this cam for him. Honestly i would stick with a 228 cam. Its smaller, better drive ability, but will still make great power

DO NOT choose a cam based on what it sounds like ... do a little research and figure out what you want out of your car and choose a cam that suit YOUR needs.

I agree with Crainholio, TRex v2 is the right choice for you. You dont even need any supporting mods, just slap that baby in there.

im not choosing a cam for sound, it sounds pretty good with the LM but i jus want a little more booost in power for my car, without affecting the longevity or possibly shorting the life on the engine which has about 80k miles on it

its just that i got enough money now from work and xmas and lots of texas holdem and i finally wanna put some more hp and tq, im lookin to jus find a cam that does not require alot, just a installation and a tune is what im looking for

but if theres something else i am missing, id like to know

What all do you have done to your car? How high would you like to spin the motor?

Considering he said "street and gas friendly", then the T-Rex would be the about the worst cam he could get.

HawaiianZ28, just call up thunder racing and talk to one of the techs about what kind of cam you should get. They'll also help you figure out what else you need go buy (pushrods, springs, retainers, gaskets...) Things to consider: will you be getting heads, will you be doing gears (4.10's/3.73's), will you be in stop and go traffic, is it a daily driver, are you an auto or m6...

If you want durability, then don't go with anything that has too much lift. Considering what you said in ur first post, then I'd look for something in the neighborhood of 228/230 duration. If you get much more duration than that, you'll want to get 4.10's in the rear since u'll be a dog down low.

Everyone in this thread recommending the Trex should read the cam sticky

I was kidding but whatever. I really believe the trex with no other mods is the right choice.

Very true. The best advice I can tell anyone is to spend a few hours looking up dyno numbers in the dyno section. Get those specs from powerful combos (not just peak numbers if this is a daily driver/street car) and them come back over to the internal section with the specs to think about why a specific duration/lsa/lift worked on a particular combo.
