Notch in the 853 casting heads. What is that?

What does it look like? I need to buy some head gaskets but don't know what to buy.What is this notch that people talk about?

All the ones I've seen do. Just use the 97-01 GM graphite gaskets with them.

I saw this post so I checked my old heads. They are 2000 models and they don't have that notch. Makes you wonder why it was ever there.
