stick something in the cylinder and rotate the crank, when you feel it hit its close to the top.the valves will drop a little though

I used a long piece of heatshrink when doing this. However, I found the LS1HowTo article to be very informative on an easier way of doing it. If you look at the dot on the crank timing gear you can tell which pistons are at TDC. Check out the article and look under the "Top Dead Center Method" section under option B.

Of course, this is assuming that you also have the front cover off. If not, disregard this post.

electrical cord, a straw, or anything thats not going to break off. check out the LS1howto guide posted above. that will give you the cam and crank gear locations, and also tell you what pistons are at TDC.
when i did my valve springs, the TDC method worked great for all cylinders but #8 all the way in the back on the passenger side. the valve will fall a VERY little bit without compressed air, but the little bit makes a huge difference.
Good luck

I used the TDC method multiple times and never put anything into the spark plug holes. I just let the valves fall a little and never had an issue.

Go to a Chinese resturant. Order dinner. When finished put the chopsticks in your pocket on the way out the door. Now you figure out what to do with the chopsticks.
