Default Understanding fittings...

Having some issues here finding the fittings i need to finish my oil drain for turbo set up.... will NPT work with -AN fittings? Like will a 1/2 NPT male screw into a -10an female? Or will an adaptor be required. The part that i am running into issues with is i need to come out of a -10 female OR male drain, into 5/8 hose. the 5/8 hose then has to T together into a 3/8 male pump. So its a lot of converting... if NPT will screw into -AN, then i'm in business. If it does... what sizes mix with which, for example, 1/2 npt screws into -10an ? What -an fits with 3/8 NPT? Thanks!

It will not work directly screwing into each other. -AN sizes are in 16ths so -10 an is 10/16 or 5/8. -6AN is 3/8.

http://www.scirn.net/an_fittings.htm

Have you looked at the usual sites....Earls, XRP etc????

I am having a little difficulty envisioning your setup.
Where is the -10 drain point you refer to?
Which pump are you connecting to?
Does the pump have NPT openings or AN?

Should be an easy solution with all the fittings and adaptors readily available.

im having issues finding what ineed at the normal places. The drain out of the turbos is a -10 male or female, has a little piece in there already that would make it male or else i could take it out and it would be -10an female. So i need a -10 male or female to 5/8 barbed. the drains then need to go to the pump which is 3/8 male NPT so for that i guess i need a T fitting, one end a 3/8 NPT female, and the other 2 at 5/8 barbed.

I think I am in a similar position as far as trying to get stuff and explain stuff so here's what I did: I got a piece of paper and drew up the system I want to put together with the parts I have and still need. Tomorrow I am going to scan a copy and 1) post it on the board and ask for feedback and 2) after I get it ironed out, send it to someone (like a sponsor) that sells fittings and have them send me what I need. This way, they will know exactly what I am talking about. I labeled all of the fitting sizes and type that I knew so anyone looking at it will have a good idea of exactly what I have and what I need.

Just a thought!

ok cool, thanks!

If you are saying that -10an= 10/16, so would a 5/8 male screw into my -10an female? Or would they still not work?

OK so you have a 10 an coming out of a turbo and need to get to 3/8 basicly, hows this work for you? -10 braided line to a -10 to 3/8 adapter?

these arnt -10 there only -6 but figured it might give you an idea.

but the thing is, i need 2 -10 drain lines going to one 3/8 npt male pump. Heres a list of fittings i need.

2 - -10an male or female to 5/8 barbed
1- T fitting, (1 side- 3/8 npt female, other 2 sides, 5/8 barbed)
1- 3/8 npt female to 3/8 barbed.

It is 2 fittings for oil drain to 5/8 hose, the 2 5/8 hose to T into the 3/8 pump, then 1 fitting for other end of pump to a 3/8 hose, already have 3/8 barbed fitting for the timing cover.

Post up a pic of the pieces you have, maybe that will help us visualize your dilema.

Exclamation

AN fittings are 37* flares. NPT is 45*. The AN fittings have zero compatibility with NPT fittings. They will not connect.
The screw in, AN fittings, are a strait thread and use o'rings for sealing.
NPT threads are tapered, and use interference fit to seal.

There are adapters to mate AN and NPT connections.
IE:
3/8NPT male to -6, -8, -10 AN, etc, are common parts.
You can also buy such fittings as strait, 30*, 45*, etc.
FAR too many combos to list.
Do yourself a favor, and get a catalog from Earls, Aeroquip, etc. They will clearly show the combos...

A fundamental difference is that AN fittings have straight threads while NPT threads are tapered.
