Road Racing - 140 treadwear rating

What would the best tire for road racing be on a tire with treadwear rating of 140 or higher. Doing the redlinetimeattack again and new rules for street class

As there are probably very few tires currently made with a 140-160-180 treadwear rating (especially in our sizes), I would just go with the affordable Falkens (Azenis 615s), at 200 treadwear. Or you could go with the more costly BFG KDs at the same treadwear. What size wheel are these going on??

Also look at the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires and Toyo RA-1's.

The MPSCups lasted me over 6K miles (mostly street) and held up well on the track.

They have to have a tread rating of 140 or higher. the Cup tires are only 80s. i am using the Stock SS wheels. What is the largest size i can safley run on the stock SS wheels from my 99SS.

I don't think Yoko still makes anything over (or under for that matter, anymore) 140 treadwear in our 275/40 17 size, do they?? Are the AVS Sports still available in this size?

The Yoko AVS ES 100 (good at many things but does not great at any) is available in 275/40/17. OK tire.

Tire Rack has the AVS Sport listed available.

I Have much experience with the KD. Get the KD!!!!!

You could fit a 285/40 17 on those, But I WOULDN'T!! Your steering response/turn in/transitions will be MUCH (night and day) better with the 275/40 17s. There are more tires available in that size as well.

Falken RT-615s, definitely. Have them on my Mustang, and had their predecessor (Azenis Sport) on my old Integra. They're hard as rocks in sub-50 degree temps until you get them warmed up, but when they're warm, they GRIP. RT-615 FTW!!! :hail:

I got 10,000+ miles out of my toyo ra1's. I thought that was good for those tires, although they do look like their shaved now.

RA-1s have 100 treadwear. ;)

I just bought a set of Hankook Z212's, but haven't yet mounted them yet. They're made to compete with the Azenis' for SCCA STS class, I believe. Hopefully they will hold up well to the track day abuse I plan on putting them through. I've went through a few sets of old-style Azenis' on lighter import cars and they're great when they're warm, but not hot. They get pretty greasy when hot, and also tend to grip less for some odd reason when worn down. :confused:

Cool, thanks for the tips. Yeah, the main reason I went with them was the price. At, I think, $92 a piece, I couldn't beat 'em! :)

Nah, I just went with a 245/45-16, though. They're about 1" shorter than the stockers, so it's like a bit of added gear ratio for free. I was given a free set of old-swirl-style Firebird wheels and didn't want to dish out any money for 17's. I figured I won't be racing, but will only be doing track days, so I can live with 'em.
