My buddy is VERY displeased with his GSD3s, he cannot seem to get them to hook at all in first or second, and even 3rd half the time. He can go sideways in 3rd at 60mph using only the throttle, no clutch dump. He only has 315RWHP (mustang dyo, so maybe 325 on a dynojet) with a 4.10 gear and a 6 speed. He has been considering moving to the nitto 555R, expecting a big jump in traction. Ive told him they are somewhat better but there wont be much of a difference. I also told him its his driving habits, but the car will go sideways at 60 in 3rd with just throttle input. 1st and second are worthless. A honda civic can practically beat him off the line it sounds like.

The car is a daily driver so the m/t drag radial is out. Seems the BFG may be another answer, but he does not like how fast they wear out. So seems Nitto DR is the only logical answer.

Can someone that has had both say a little about each, or if you have had a good or bad experience with either can you throw your .02 cents in? Ive searched and shown him threads, but he finds other threads saying something different. Trying to get one good discussion on these two tires.

I'm interested because I'm deciding which these two tires I'm going to install in the spring. I had Nittos spring through fall of last year and they would hook ok and maintain traction on the street if I was careful with the throttle. I had no problems in the rain, but I'd like something a little more confidence-inspiring in the wet, and that's why I'm considering the GSD3's. But if they don't hook at all - like my KDWS - I'm not interested.

For a daily driver the GSD3's are perfect for me. With normal driving I don't have any traction problems.

I dont know about getting sideways at 60......

maybe his tire presure is too high?

I have little/no traction problems.

It amazes me every time I see another thread asking questions like "Why don't these street tires hook?" or "What street tire can hook xxxrwhp?"

If you want traction, buy a good drag radial.

Something is wrong if hes breaking them loose like that, i would look into it. You need alot more than 315 hp to break them loose in 3rd

Well some people are trying to find out the best option on a tire thats gonna last more then 4-5K miles!!! Dont expect to pull wheelies, but want to find teh best hooking tire that can last 10-15K at least. And these are the two top runners as far as traction and lasting a half way descent amount. So maybe we can compare these two directly.

Thats what i was saying, cant figure out what it could be though? It has BMR tubular LCA's, he was spinning like nuts with those, added an adjustable spohn torque arm taht mounts to the floor, its adjusted 2 degrees down i believe (whatevers suggested) and still you can be rilling at 60 in 3rd, floor it and it lights em up. Tire pressure has gone as low as 25 trying to find traction. Crazy stuff i tell ya!

i have 315 Nittos and i luv them. they hook great once heated up. i do a quick burnout and i can launch the hell out of them and they just grip. i would definetly recommend them.

I get 7-8k out of 275/40/17 MT DRs and they hook hard.

The drag radial with the best mileage/traction ratio is probably the Nitto 555R.

The GSD3 is purely a street tire.

Just buy a nice snow tire! they're soft I've hooked up to 1.7 60fts with them haha

BFGs and MT DRs, i am getting bfgs next they are inbetween a nitto and a MT. BFg will get more life than a MT DR, but hook a bit less. when warm BFGs are awesome for the street/track though.
After the heads and cam swap the nittos drag radials are garbage, i could bog off the line but soon as she gets up into the rpms it just rips them loose, then same thing in 2nd , 3rd, at the track and the street.

If he's not happy with the GSD3's, he's probably got his mind made up. BUT, for arguments sake:

I've had my GSD3's for.... 15,XXX+ miles and im still happy with them. I have relatively mild mods, sig below. I can spin the tires too, but if you're not TRYING to spin, you wont. I have stock gears tho, not 4.10's, those might make a difference, along with his suspension setup. In the rain, im VERY confident in these tires, even after 15k.
