Default Can anybody confirm this rumor?

I have heard that Chevrolet MAY increase the base horsepower level in the '08 Corvette. It is rumored that the base model may be bumped to 450 hp while the Z06 is increased to 550 hp. Does anyone have any evidence to support or refute this rumor?

Dodge has just released the new stats on the '08 Viper. The motor is now rated at 600 hp with a slightly larger (8.3 to 8.4 liters) displacement. I have no doubt that an '08 Viper would beat a current Z06, but if the Z06 is bumped to 550 in '08, it may beat the revised Viper. The Viper still retains the same vehicle weight, which about 300 lbs heavier than the Z06.

Here is a link to the 600 hp Viper motor:

so did I, I believe the reason was California emmissions later on(the current 427 wouldnt be smog legal) so they were gonna go with a S/C LS2. Wish I could find the link!

As far as I know, a supercharged version of the Z06 will come out as an '09 model with a 6.2 SC engine rated at 650 hp.

I have also heard that the emission's would only be good for the current LS7 motor for another year.

Man I have trouble figuring out how the V8 7.0L LS7 might not pass emissions yet the V10 8.4L Viper engine does...guess it's all in the tuning.

GM has always had issues with smog legal corvettes since like the 80s not sure why but thats what I was told when working at a dealership a few years ago. Im not sure if they do but at first they werent gonna sell 6-speed models of the new vettes when the C6's were first sold.

Supposed to be the LS3 as the base motor rated somewhere in the 450 hp range.

well they say that the new Camaro SS will have the same power as the Z06 out now, and Chevy usually wants the corvette to be the fastest in the fleet so yeah i believe its true. (i could be wrong)

Cite your sources...because I have seen nothing that compared an SS to the Z06...I'm curious though.

We're not gonna know anything untill GM actually releases info... There are spy pics of a supercharged LSx motor as well as pics of a 'vette that "sounds supercharged" lapping Nuremberg, rumored power numbers range all over the place. I can't imagine the base 'vette getting any more than a 25hp increase, they've gotta leave room to grow for future models, 50hp is a big jump. The current ZO6's days are supposedly numbered, as are the LS7s, we'll likely see this new motor in a ZO6-derived chasis. As for the Camaro powertrain choices, it's anyone's guess...

i find it strange that the z06s gas mileage is WAYYY better than the vipers (atleast on highway), and yet doesnt meet emissions as the viper does.

gm high tech performance "suggested" taht a chevy camaro ss could have a ls7 under the hood, but it was pure speculation, which of course make the people on the internet try to pass off as fact.

Sweet. This is why I don't use these sections for fact. I'll give most of the stuff I see in Automotive News section the benifit of the doubt. But unless it's a GM press release...yea you get where I am going with this.

I'm not sure either. I don't know enough about emissions to speak intelligently on the subject so I won't speculate.

What I do know is that the current 427 MAY be on its way out because of this problem, which consequently put the moratorium on the new super vette. I am wondering if the LS7 is in fact discontinued, maybe GM will make the S/C 6.2 the standard engine in the Z06 with other upgrades to enhance performance such as braking and handling?

Lastly, California needs to lighten up.

I wonder about the LS7. Did anyone else hear that GM is thinking about using it to power a new silverado SS. They made that concept for SEMA and I read somewhere that it is considered for production. And that actually makes sense because producing the LS7 just for the camaro doesn't make sense, but if it was used for two vehicles made it could be justified. Pure speculation of course, but it would be sweet!
