Hate to be the one to tell you. Mine was doing the same thing. That is caused by the 3rd gear shift fork being bent. For whatever reason, they thought it would be a good idea to make it out of aluminum. There is no way to fix it other than rebuilding the trans, or replacing it. Luckily, mine was under warranty, and I was able to get a brand new T-56 free of charge. I hope you have a warranty???!!!???

Get the GM updates done and it won't do it anymore. Revised sincros and forks, its an old update that nobody ever had done. I had mine done last year under warrenty and they put a new LS7 clutch in for me while they were at it. Be aware that sometimes the T-56 doesn't like to come apart, it cost GM a lot of money to fix mine when she didn't want to come apart (main shaft not cheap )

Before you tear into the transmission, do you have an aftermarket shifter? If so, does it have bump stops that could have backed themselves out a little? For about 6 months, I only had 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears because it kept popping out of the others.

Turns out (and I'm still embarrassed 8 months later...) that a while after I installed my Pro 5.0 shifter, the little bolts that serve as the bump stops backed themselves out by a few threads and were preventing the shifter from going all the way into gear.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but it's worth a shot to check.

Nah, he's got the stock shifter with the Short Stick on it. Definitely a bent shift fork.

Sorry again man.....I feel for you.

my dad thinks that its a linkage/bumpstops

he had a hurt in his 64 chevelle waaaaaaaay back in teh day and said he had the same thing happen to him and wants me to find out how to adjust the linkage and the bump stops, so i think im going to try that before calling t56 rebuilds

There is nothing adjustable on the stock shifter, and the linkages.......never seen something go wrong with one of those. Every time I have ever seen someone have this problem it = bent 3rd gear shift fork in the tranny. I'm not trying to discourage you, but I did a lot of research on this problem when it happened to me and it was always the same thing. It's from banging gears hard into 3rd. After you get it fixed you would be doing yourself a favor by getting an aftermarket shifter that has adjustable shift stops on it to prevent it from happening again. Good luck man.

Most of the time a bent 3/4 shift fork will cause problems in both 3rd gear and 4th gear. If you are having issues with it popping out of 3rd I can almost guarantee you it is the slider keys in the 3/4 slider. We have built over 750 of these and in that time only see 3-4 shift fork issues. Almost every transmission that comes in has a broken key in the 3/4 slider.

Thanks,
Amber

Try banging gears into 4th really hard a bunch of times and see if you can't bend it back the other way! HAHAHA NO, don't really do that.

Here is a better idea:

Having the same problem here as well... well not as bad as yours, but itll do it on occassion. Perhaps a few times a month. But as someone else mentioned, they did release a TSB regarding the problem...

TSB bent fork info:
Transmission Jumps Out of 3rd Gear (Replace 3-4 Shift Fork, 3-4 Synchronizer Assembly, 3rd Gear Blocker Ring and 3rd Speed Gear) #01-07-29-003A
Transmission Jumps Out of 3rd Gear (Replace 3-4 Shift Fork, 3-4 Synchronizer Assembly, 3rd Gear Blocker Ring and 3rd Speed Gear)
1999-2000 Chevrolet Camaro

1999-2000 Pontiac Firebird

with Manual Transmission (RPO MM6)

This bulletin is being revised due to a change in part numbers. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-29-003 (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).
I brought mine in just before warranty expired, and they drove it and said they couldnt recreate the problem, and thus couldnt justify tearing into the tranny to replace parts. Im pissed I didnt push them harder to have the work done at the time, but luckily <knock on wood> the problem hasnt seemed to progress much in the 30K miles since then. Best of luck in getting yours sorted.

I bought my car used and puchased an aftermarket warranty with it. Turned out to be the best decision I ever made. 2 weeks after I got the car they replaced the whole trans. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $3500 worth of work, not a dime came out of my pocket.
