Default How does LSA affect Compression Ratio?

Like the title says:

Can someone explain to me what affect going from a 115 LSA to a 118 LSA would have on compression ratio?

Changing LSA won't change static compression but it could change dynamic compression. Mostly depends on if the LSA change moved the intake valve closing point. Exhaust valve opening changes can affect torque as well. Giving a well rounded answer to your question might take 1000 words.

The simple answer: The higher LSA will decrease the dynamic compression in almost every case that applies to the cams and cars on this board.
But Patrick is right. There's no simple answer.

So if I understand correctly the LSA may affect the intake closing point. If my IVC goes from 45 ABDC to 47 ABDC my dynamic compression ratio would be reduced.

Is that it?

Basically, that's the main part that you should be concerned with. Yes.

Changing the LSA won't affect your static comp ratio, unless your are running you piston to valve clearance at the minimum, at which point you would either be backing up the pocket depths, or deepening them, depending on which way you go with the LSA. Even when you do this it normally makes minimal changes to the comp. ratio, since p to v clearance only changes about .007" to .010" per degree of advance or retard.

Of course a cam doesn't affect static compression. It changes dynamic compression.

It's dynamic compression that I'm concerned with. I'm going to a baby cam for my "wife driven grocery getter" and I'm concerned that I might need to shave the heads a bit more to maintain DC.

You may find that a smaller duration cam with a wide LSA gives you more DCR than the cam you're running now. It all depends on the valve events chosen.
