Default Should I get this 1995 Trans Am???

I went to go check out a red 1995 Trans Am today. The guy has had it for under a year, and now has a kid coming so he needs to sell it to get a sedan and needs the cash. He wants $2000 for it, but will take $1500 cash. The body is in good shape, just has some slightly faded paint, but the bodywork is fine. It jhas the exact same body as mine, it looks like a formula but I could not find any Formula logos. It doesn't have the ground effects. He says it needs new piston rings, it blows out a little bit of blue tinted smoke, not too much though. The engine sounds smooth and clean, with 150k miles on it. He claimed the guy before him bored it over 50 or 60 (i'm not too sure on that though..) It is an auto, has a Flowmaster catback, and fairly new steel 1-piece driveshaft. The throttle cable could use a replacement, but it works fine. Some little knick-knacks here and there could be fixed up, but nothing quite major.. There is no check engine light, it sounds pretty good, it has a delay in the throttle because the cable is loose but it could be fixed. The engine looked pretty clean. It has some brand *** new nice tires on the front (didn't catch what brand/name they were). If the engine happened to be ****, I could probably use the rear-end w/ diff and brakes, and driveshaft and other stuff. I have not driven it yet though. I do not want to swap the engine into my V6, I would like to buy it and park it in my backyard, and gradually fix it up. I wouldn't plan on registering it or insuring it until it is finished.. I will also call him and request the VIN soon to run a carfax on it.. If anyone could run a VIN for me too, that would be great, but if not it's fine.

He will take $1500 cash.. I want to keep my V6 and I do NOT want to do a motor swap. BTW I am 18, in college, part time job. And I cannot afford an LS1 or anything like that. How does this all sound?

even if it is a fomula, id get it just for the hell of it. i think formulas are more rare then TA, especially back then. 1500 sounds like a good price, even if it does smoke some. find out for sure what it is, run the VIN. if there are no ground effects or badges, who knows.......might have been a motor swap for all you know. just be sure you really want it, and want it now. dont buy it and be sorry you did a few months down the road, wishing for an LS1 or something in better shape.

He did say he thought it used to be a V6 and had a different LT1 put in it.. before he got it.. but I honestly don't think he knows his motors, he claimed it was from a 2000 Trans Am and i told him that was impossible.. But a sleeper would be cool! I'm thinking about offering him $1000 flat.. and then it would definitely be worth it.. because most of the parts I want off a trans am total up to $1000.. i could use the catback, rear-end, tires, brakes, tail lights.. etc

Sounds like a total POS to me. If it were me I would save the cash, time and aggravation and not buy it.

Its NOT a Trans Am if it doesn't have the ground effects. Does it say 'Formula V8' on the rear bumper? Have you looked at the engine yourself to verify?

Do us a favor. If you have a digital camera, go see the car and take pics of 4 things.

1. RPO codes either on drivers side door or in the glove box (Believe it was in there for 1995)
2. Exterior of car.
3. Engine bay.
4. VIN # (On RPO codes anyways.)

Post up the pics so we can tell you a little more about it. As it sits right now, I'd be very cautious about it.

Yeah, i'll probably go and check it out again, I was going to bring my digital camera yesterday. I asked him to call me back with the VIN, but he hasn't yet.

Hey, I say for $1000 just buy it for a fun project car or something. Sounds like it was a V6 car with an LT1 swapped in... couldn't that mean it still has V6 suspension? That wouldn't be good. But, hey, for $1000 what the hell. I agree though take some pics and post up.
