Default stock jeep wrangler 4.0L radiator good enough for LS1?

ok, so i know a guy thats running a 5.3 vortec with his stock jeep 4.0L radiator..

an adapter company (when i just tried ordering their electric fan made for the wrangler) said that the stock 4.0L most likely will not be able to cool off the 5.7L.. and that i should buy their 560 dollar radiator...

true?

I imagine you will be fine. Esp if the motor is stock. Would you mind PMing me on how you did this conversion? This is something I would love to do.
Thanks

I just finished the same project - LS1 into a '97 wrangler - and went through the same dilemma. After doing some research and giving it some thought, I think the stock radiator is probably not up to the task of cooling the bigger motor. But then again everyone also said the stock AX-15 trans wouldn't hold up either, and maybe it won't, but so far so good! I guess if you want to save a couple bucks it's worth a try, if it doesn't do the job changing out a radiator doesn't take a whole lot of work. I went with an Advance Adapters radiator - part #716693-AA and the quality is oustanding, but it doesn't come cheap.

Good luck with your project, let me know if I can be of any help - what trans are you using?

A couple specs on mine

'97 TJ
5.5" RE long arm lift
35" SSR tires
LS1, 5-spd
4.88 gears
Full float locked D44 rear
f+r line locks
fuel cell
lockout front hubs
9000lb winch
Autometer gauge cluster

Try it. If the motor runs hot then spend the cash.

I'll 2nd that. It's not going to magically explode when you turn the key if the radiator is inadequate--you should know if you're running hot LONG before you damage the engine. Avoid traffic jams until you know how well it's going to work.

How hot do the 5.3's run stock? The LS1's normally run what I'd call ridiculously hot. The stock tune doesn't even turn on the fans in low-speed mode until 219F, and doesn't crank them all the way up until 234F. At those temps with my old smallblock I would have been towing the car home! I'd image the 5.3 is about the same.

Default Radiator for 5.7

I've got a 4.8 in a 98 Wrangler. Stock HD 4.0 radiator works great.

98 degree weather no problem.

I've got a 79 Camaro with LS1 and using a Griffin/Summit universal radiator.

16" Spal fan. Never over heats even at 105 degree in traffic.Fan kicks on at 205 and out at 195. Temp sensor welded into the Radiator tank.

Email with any questions.

Keep in mind that as an aluminum block, the LS1 cools itself a bit better than an old iron 350. Same radiator, both with 160* stats - my LS1 runs cooler than my old 350 did.
