Default WTF... LOW COMPRESSION? Ugh....

Car is a 98 Z28 Auto. 56K.

Had a stumbling issue and a check engine light.

Took it to the dealer and they just called telling me #1 is low on compression.

I dont suppose I'm looking at anything cheap here, am i.

What was the compression (PSI)? You may just have a broken valvespring.

Yep could be as simple as the head or as bad as a ring.

They didnt tell me what the PSI was, or what the difference was between them.

I'm hoping for something reasonably simple. Shouldt have to be worrying about this crap at 56K.

Shouldn't be taking it to a dealer! You'll never know what was really wrong, and you'll get raped on the price.

and they very well could have not screwed the fitting in all the way either and there isnt anything wrong at all. Ask them what the engine light code was.

I wouldnt be suprised if it was just an ignition misfire and it washed down that cylinder. There are a lot of people out there that like to skip the basics when diagnosing a vehicle and jump straight to intrusive tests that may be misleading. Just like with a heart surgeon, Get a second diagnosis.

Code was for a Cyl #1 misfire.

Light would blink every so often and then stay on sometimes.

Really weird.

And I'm not terribly concerned about the dealer situation, I work in the business and get quite a healthy break on price, and these guys know me very well.

Yeah, me too...dealership I worked for "scanned my car for codes" (5.0) said "nothing came up" charged me half-price. I went and bought a handheld...got so many codes I swapped it to carb. BULLSHIT!

I had a loss of compression in my #2 and it didnt throw a misfire code. Didnt throw any code at all. Take it somewhere else and have the compression checked. Dont tell them what you already know. Never hurts to get a second opinion.
