Default Fog of Smoke

Well I have a 01 LS1 with 45K miles or so.

It's been known to smoke a little (catch can on the way), however today I was sitting at a light and the smoke came around, so I drive off and look in the rear view mirror. Car behind me is covered in white smoke, I can barely see it. Smoke definetely smells like oil. I need to know if catch can would fix that or if that big amount of smoke means I should perhaps look into other problems? I daily drive the car, has little puffs of smoke maybe 5 times a week and I maybe get WOT on it 3 times a week or so.

Also, just took off the oil cap to add some more oil and there's yellow ...sludge on the cap. No idea why it's there, but it's second time it is.

Thanks.
