Default Gas Gauge Acting Up

I've got 50+ miles on this tank so far and the gauge still reads above the full line. As much as I'd love to believe the car is getting awesome gas mileage I know thats not the case. Any ideas why the gauge reads this way? Cheap/Easy Fix?

Thanks,
Kyle

join the club. i go ~120 miles until i hit the F. then, by 170 mles i'm at the half a tank mark. don't ask me how but it takes 120 miles to hit the F and only 50 miles to go from F to 1/2. the thing that pisses me off is over the summer, i would hit the F after 40 miles, the 3/4 mark after 105 miles and the 1/2 at 170 miles. don't ask me why it's all screwed up, but it is

Mine used to be like that as well. I used to get all happy when I would get 100 miles before even getting down past the F. Then I'd end up getting only 150 or so miles by the time it gets to half a tank.

"used to be like that as well"...as in it doesn't do that anymore? how did you fix it? did it fix itself?

A lot of it has to do with the calibration of the gauge in the PCM...I used HPTuners to keep it from doing that.

I think a lot of it has to do with my driving style changing. Before I just used to speed when I was late. Now I tend to speed even if I'm not late.

you think your guage is weird I have those same problems you already mentioned plus sometimes the guage slowly works it's way up from E to the actual level in the tank it may take 15-20 minutes or if I let the car sit motionless for 5 mins the guage will stop working(go to E and check guages light comes on) until you shut it off and restart it.

Mine used to wait till 45 miles before hitting F, the move down gradually. Now it moves past F faster, but I still get the same mileage. It started doing this after it got really cold here, so I think that temperature might have something to do with it.

A little update.... It's now June and the gauge has quit moving entirely. I'm hitting 170+ miles and gauge stays about the F line. It makes me uncomfortable to not have a working fuel gauge. Any one else?

yea man, I feel your pain. I've been told by quite a few people that it is my sending unit. Mine didn't start doing it until I filled up from Flying J (i'll never get cheap gas again)... I ran a can of seafoam in the tank and it helped a little. But the damage is already done. Just keep up with your trip meter, thats all i'm doing now. It makes me a lil uncomfortable not knowing exactly how much gas I have too, but i'm too broke to get it fixed at the moment.

Ya lol. If I wasn't such a tight *** I would have it fixed but to spend money that will not increase performace or looks would be wasted bills. The ironic thing is on my car it always says full and my truck gauge always says emtpy. You just can't win. haha

My fuel guage is wierd too. I believe there is a sensor near the gas tank that gets worn out pretty quick, anyone know of this? I read it somewhere

my aftermarket gauge does a similar thing. stay on F until about 100 miles then plummet to 3/4 then 1/2 pretty damn fast. at 3/4 tank i fill up 9 gallons at 1/2 tank i fill up 15 galloons at 1/4 tank i fill up 18 gallons. (79 TA...21 galloon tank lol)

what you need to do is monitor how the gauge acts...and how many galloons are REALLY in the tank at certain points.

monitor your mileage. if you get 20mpg in the city then assume every 15 miles you used one gallon...highway or city.

Funny I cant keep mine on the F. I know a tank of gas last me about 4 days since my car is a DD. I drive 60 miles a day(30 to work, 30 miles from work) so I must get between 225 to 240 miles to the tank. The weird thing about my gauge is that every time I turn the car on I have less gas than when I turned it off. For example if the gauge is at 3/4 tank when I turn the car off , later when start the car back up the gauge will read 1/2 way between the 1/2 and 3/4 marks (I know confusing, but that is best way I know to describe it). How many miles the rest of you getting per tank.

Im not sure how it reads the gas level in F-bodys but some get crapped up and dont work right. Try runnin FP60 for a few tanks or a good fuel system cleaner.

ok to answer the question its most likely the sending unit. if you want to save money and find out if it is or not you can drop the tank pull out the entire sending unit/pump and check the voltage when you move the float up and down (up=high voltage, down=low voltage). if the voltage reads wrong then yes it is that and all you have to do is replace the float and rod that comes with it. or if you dont have the money you can take a small pocket screw driver and bend out the brushes on the rod that holds the float so they make a good contact. be careful if you are goin to push the brushes out they are brittle. if any of yall have anymore questions feel free to ask. thanks, miles
