Default LSx in a BMW 5 series (E39)

Has anyone done a e39/LSx swap?

With the thread about the e46 bmw and CAN system I am wondering when did the CAN system get put into BMW cars?

Does the e39 5 series 1997-2003 have the CAN system?

I would think this would be an easier swap than the 3 series for the simple fact of all the room under the hood.

I'm not sure about the latter cars but to my knowledge the 97 528 is the most basic one of the E39 cars. I believe it does have some CAN systems in it but not alot. The hardest part would be making the instrument panel work with the GENIII engine. There is a guy on this forum who did the swap with a TTLS1 but I haven't heard from him in a while. The six cylinder cars would be better to use as there are much cheaper and they use rack & pinion steering as apposed to the steering box equipt V8 cars.
