column is held in by 2 large nuts under the dash and 3 bolts at the inside of the firewall. You need to drop the underdash panel and knee bolster to see them.

What car do you have?

Do you mean the whole column is loose?? Very unusual but can be the major mounting points of the column itself in that case.

I find it much more normal for the steering wheel itself to become loose with wiggled side to side. That is a broken stud inside the column itself.

the bushings in the column might be worn out.

yea if you push up or down on the wheel, it budges....not to bad though because it take alot for it to move

can i repair this myself or do i need special tools for the repair, i dont know exactly what needs to be replaced or tightened

A helms manual is your friend. Particularly if the wheel moves and the column doesn't. Than you will need a special tool to get in the column and you will also need to pull the airbag which I would never try without a Helms.

If the column is moving and the steering wheel is only moving with it than it is likely an exterior fix and that is much much easier.

The tilt bowl bolts could also be the culprit, causing the steering wheel itself to pivot as a whole.
It is not so hard of a job with the right steering wheel puller set!
