Default How narrow on the street is reasonable for front wheels/tires?

I scored some AR Hopster 16x9.5's for the rear, and I'm curious what is reasonable to run up front width wise?

Car is currently daily driven, will be weekend only car by the end of the year (I hope). There are basically no cool twisty roads around here so I'm not to worried about cornering. The streets do have some occasional potholes to contend with so I figure front runners are out. 5.5" wide wheels OK, or 7's?
