Default cant downshift from 6th to 5th

let me start by saying once every 2-3 months or so my car will have light clutch pedal pressure at startup until i pump it a few times and it builds up and i drive for a mile or two....this morning when i started the car up the pedal seemed to be a little mushy and it didnt seem to go all the way back to normal for a little longer than usual...the car drove fine through all the forward gears and i held on to 6th till i was about to exit the freeway roughly 20 mile trip and when i went to put it from 6th to 5th it felt like i hit the reverse lockout...put it in neutral double pumped the clutch and tryed again to no luck...i even pushed a little but it didnt wanna go in so i didnt try to force it...then i put the car in fourth and tryed to upshift to 5th and it went in but with a grind....weird cuz the clutch was fully depressed and it has never grinded before going from 4 to 5...
did the same thing on the trip home as well...wouldnt go from 6 to 5 at all and grinded going from 4 to 5 once out of 5 times...
the only way that i could get it to downshift from 6 to 5 was if i revved the engine over 5k and then it seemed to slip right in....i forgot to check my clutch fluid reservoir if it was dirty today...i will have to take a look at it...would a leak in the hydraulic system cause somethiung like this?

a few nights ago i did the 2-1 shift on the freeway...i got back on the clutch very quickly but it still overreved the engine....the car seemed to have no ill effects after that occurred that evening...even the next day it drove fine but i never went up to 6th gear so i dont know if it had the problem yesterday...today was the first time it has ever happened and im trying to find out why..im open to any suggestions...could a transmission be overevved and if so what damage could it have caused?

cliffnotes:
overrevved engine and now car wont go from 6th to fifth without reving the engine high

anybody got any ideas....it doesnt seem like a big deal now but i really dont want it to turn into something larger down the road....it feels just like a reverse lockout on 5th gear...it wont go into fifth from 6th or from neutral if you had previously been in 6th...
i dont really wanna try forcing it because id like to get as much possible life outta this thing before i need to rebuild it...id appreciate any suggestions...thanks

upshifting from 4th to 5th today the tranny grinded 5th with the clutch fully depressed...it almost seems like the clutch isnt properly releasing for only fifth gear...even in at a steady freeway roll in neutral i need to rev the motor up and triple pump the clutch for it to go into fith...im not familiar enough with the internal components of a manual tranny to understand whats going on..all i know is 5th gear is acting plain funny...is it possible that a shot or fatigued tranny mount might cause something like this?

Sounds like you really already have your answer. The clutch is not fully releasing. Could be air in the hydraulic system= do a vac bleed. You also said you over-reveed the engine. That over speeds the clutch too. The clutch may have loose segments that essentially make it"fatter" in that area and may cause drag/ non release.

i see what your saying...however this doesnt feel like air in the system....its only affecting one gear not all of them...every other gear shifts and acts exactly the same as before....its hard for me to explain it but until now when i shifted to every gear the shifter felt very direct...now when i shift to fifth it almost feels like theres gravel or something in the way...just doesnt feel as direct to me any more...
how exactly does the shifter control the transfer of one gear to another? are their individual forks/selectors for each gear? is it possible one of these got sheared or bent, pretty much anything that wouyld not cause it to shift properly for that desired gear?
any tranny specialists as sponsors on this site i can talk to?

A piece of my 5th gear came off in my 6 speed many years ago. It wouldn't downshift from 6 to 5. It sounded like a grind and something kind of rattling a little bit. Had it taken apart and found a piece of the tooth of the 5th gear jammed in amongst the parts and there was a chunk of the 5th gear missing. It would go from 4 to 5 but not very well. All I remember was that I missed 3rd gear once and it kinda grinded 5th at the time.

sounds like a bad/worn 5th gear synchro. www.t56rebuilds.com is a sponsor. no matter what, its gonna have to come apart to be inspected/repaired. dont feel bad, im in the same boat, except mine is third gear.

yeah i figure ima let it be for a while and just skip fifth all together...
what would cause a synchro to wear prematurely? especially on a high gear like that where no one would really speed shift to grind....ive only had the car for about 6 months and have put 7k miles on it trouble free....its at 55k right now...i dont know how the previous owner drove but he did bring it into our body shop after he wrapped the rear end around a pole trying to "drift"
