Question shopping in angst or no big deal?

Noob here; did a search but could not really find the answer.

My question is when shopping for a 99-02 F-body LS1, should I be making a big deal about the difference between the 99-00 and the 01-02? Or should I just go for the best deal I can find? Engine will be going into a very small car with a limit on tire width so I don't foresee straying much from stock with a whole lotta bolt ons. Headers and exhaust will be custom so that aspect should be free flowing enough.

well if you dont know this 98-00 had a bigger cam, 01-02 had the ls6 intake but smaller cam to even it out, also better oil pump and better slaves for the tranny..

However, if you arent going to be installing a cam i would aim for a 2000 and put an ls6 intake on it you can get them used around 300. Self port the throttlebody. You would then have more power than the 01-02 bc of the cam.. If you have any money left over throw on some ls6 heads, even if theyre stock youll still see at least 15 rwhp gain.

With complete intake (ls6 manifold) and complete exhaust 00 youll be 350rwhp with similar torque.. And seeing how people put them in miatas, im sure youll have wider tires then that..

All parts interchange, if you get a good deal on a 98-99 no reason not to get it.. The earlier throttle bodies dont work on 01-02 fbodys bc of the TB cam but thats it.

edit....... I just saw you said 99-00 and 01-02.. although its really the same from 98-00... then 01-02.

99 and 00 also have 26lb injectors where 98 and 01-02 have 28 lb injectors. There is andther cheap mod if you need slightly larger injectors and you have a 99-00 motor.

I did essentially what Carado said. I have a 2000 LS1 and changed to the LS6 intake manifold. There are disadvantages to the '98s primarily the PCMs and Harnesses are different and harderd to tune. The valve covers are also different. For those reasons I suggest the best deal you can find on a 99 and newer motor.

Actually , according to a GM engineer , there were some significant improvements in the oiling system on '99 up blocks. Avoid the '98.

I think the newer smaller cam actually made more power . I still have not figured out how yet but the power ratings from GM increased on the newer motors and when I swap between the two cams in desktop dyno the newer smaller cam makes more power . I don`t know if its a better match to the flow of the heads or what.......anyone else have any theories here?

Thanks for all the help, guys!

Now what price range should the 99-00 complete engines with a T56, harness, and computer go for? I saw a '99 listed locally for about $1600 with 59k miles. It mentioned engine and trans, but I'm not sure if it included harness and computer.

I also saw an '02 with about 27k+ miles listed within a full day's drive at $2600. Again mentioned engine and trans, but not harness and computer.
