Appraisal from Car Max

Appraisal from Car Max
I took my car to Car Max for their free appraisal, They said they would give me $4500 for it.
I put all my stock equipment back on it and caped the exhaust cut out, cleaned it up real nice, detailed it inside and out. There are no rip or tears in the interior and everything works. It runs smooth, and has no problems. tires are good,
Kind of low in mind. What do you think?

I sold two cars to them they were about $500 over trade-in value listed in Kbb. Trade-in is always going to be lower than private party sales, but you don't have to deal with Joe Dirt and his buddies beating on your ride. CarMax is painless.
Go to kbb.com and see what your car is worth.

I used to work there;
they will NOT make the deal sweeter if you buy from them- the car is worth what its worth regardless- they dont screw around like that.
youve got close to 110k on the car, what do you expect from a retailer?
the car would end up being a wholesale car, they wouldnt put it on their lot.
Youll get more private party, but again you're spending your time meeting up with joe schmoe on your weekends usually. Then hes gonna beat on the car, kick the tires and walk away. if you're talking a $500-1500 difference between carmax and private party id just suck up the loss and get my check.
As for cleaning the car- they could care less. they look for structural damage, existing body damage, mechanical condition, and tires. thats about it.

well when i was looking for my car, i didnt beat on it or anything. when i sold my last car the guys drove it normal, so you will get real people that know how to test drive.
i saw a GTO at the ontario carmax, and almost had them write the papers and i was getting ready to harvest a kidney for them.

i was pleased with carmax. they said they'd give me $5000 for my car when it had about 70K. they were really friendly. i felt it could have been higher, too. but i'm no expert on selling and trading cars. i trust them though.

They quoted me like $3200.00 for mine and my car is mint inside and out. I laughed and walked out the door. This was about a year ago when they had a red 6-speed 02 WS6 on the lot I was looking at.

At the time it had around 90,000 miles. Man you can't even buy a decent third gen camaro for $3000.00 so why in the hell would I give my LS1 Z-28 away for that?!!

Anything over 100,000 miles or that has aftermarket modifications is pretty much going to be a wholesale item for them. We're not really even talking about what the resale value of it is at this point, it's based on the wholesale market. My family has bought two cars from them and it's always a straight forward experience, which is nice. We bought my wifes 04 Corolla S for right at bank loan value which was quite a bit less than the KBB blue book value. Having worked at dealerships, they are quite a bit different. That being said, if you want the most ouf of your car, sell it outright. I sold one through the autotrader mags and it was pretty painless. I was selling my 96 Grand Prix for 3500. The first caller came and drove it for about 20 minutes, offered me 3000 cash in hand, lol.

I talked with them on the phone from Springfield when the closest one was up in the Chicago area. At the time I had a 2000 Explorer Limited with every available option in near mint condition with good tires and 86K miles on it. They told me on the phone as long as what I was saying about the SUV held up when I got there that getting kbb trade in value shouldn't me a problem. Regardless, I spent 60 bucks in gas going up there and back, when I got there they did the normal dealer routine and pulled up Manheim Auto Auction reports and compared it to "similar" vehicles, and told me they would only give up to $5600 for it when the trade in value via kbb.com was around $9000. Needless to say, I didn't make the deal. Ended up trading it for a chopper and selling the chopper after I rode it around all summer for $11,000. Made out well. Patience is virtue
