Default bearing going out?

well my rear has been whining like a BIOTCH for a awhile now, and i finally got looked at by the locals, and they said it was a bearing going out. They took something and listened to the rear and decided without opening it up but i trust their judgment. Would this make it whine terribly?

whinning usualy means the rear end was set up wrong, using wrong shimming not allowing proper gear placement

have you had any rear end work done? droped lower gears in?

like others have said, bearings dont usualy make a whinning noise when busted. pop off your diff cover and see if there is any metal shavings - if so, its either a bearing or something you be able to easily see

no i haven't done any work or anything. I had the local Chevy dealer look at it so i would think they know what they are talking about, however you guys often times know more than them

for future use....it was indeed a bearing. Bearings aren't "suppose" to whine but apparently they can and BADLY

im interested in hear more about the specifics of the whine. Mine is whining, well more a waWAwaWAwa sound , similar to that of a flat spot in the tire. Took the axles out , the driver's side axle had oil all over it , the passenger side was bone dry. Would rather pay $280 than $2000+

My 12-bolt whistles like a jetliner coming in for a landing ... now, it's making bad noises form the rearend when I turn in the driveway ... out on the road at normal speeds, no noise at all ... sounds fine .... except on decceleration (at all speeds). It all started after the rear pinion seal was replaced. It's going in the shop.

I'm almost positive they didn't preload your pinion right....that's exactly what happend to me, once pinion nut was tightened & the carrier was shimmed right it was perfect...I had the SAME exact symptoms you are having BTW, My Dad & I did all the work on my rear without proper measuring tools, we did it more by feel and look....it was FRUSTRATING
