Ok here is the story im going to be doing an A4-M6 conversion on my car during the summer time and im looking at clutch packages to get and i have the choice between the billet steel (18lbs) or the aluminum (8lbs) so which one would you pick and why?

Steel if you like to drag race, aluminum if you like to auto-x. Either can be done with either but a heavier fw will help you keep from bogging off the line and a lighter one will help your engine work a lil less (less rotating mass) when you're goin 'round the road course.

steel will also be easier for daily driving because it has a lot more stored energy. clutch engagement is a lot smoother.

I have the fidanza aluminum f/w on my car and my own experience is that it isn't any problem at all for daily driving. I think the fidanza is 12 or 13 lbs. I've never heard of a LS1 aluminum f/w that's only 8 lbs. If it isn't sfi rated (I think that's right), don't buy it. Lighter f/w's will rev a lot faster than the heavier steel f/w. Just make sure whatever you buy, either it is balanced or get it balanced and take it to a shop and have the disc surface touched up. The fidanza does not come balanced and the disc surface is not ready to go. There are other brands that come ready to bolt on a go like RAM.

I haven't been one bit sorry that I switched out for the lighter f/w. It's more fun to drive and it certainly doesn't bog down on street tires.

I have the LS2 aluminum flywheel, and the difference is neglible. I guarntee noone could drive my car and tell me what kind of flywheel I have in it. So overall its worth it. Maybe for the 1-2 ponies. And I didnt have a problem with launching at the track either.

I took out the steel flywheel and went the lightweight route. I tried launching the car like I would with the heavier flywheel, it would pick the tires up, then nosedive. I even tried coming out at 6000 rpm, same thing happened. This was with 540 rwhp. I went back to the steel flywheel. Bob

On the street you will hate it and you will burn up clutches quicker if you go aluminum. Steel is fine

I have recently switched to a RAM billet steel flywheel because I had a slight vibration with the Fidanza. I think the billet (heavier than aluminum but lighter than oem) revs pretty quick and I don't see any difference taking off from a standstill. I do have 4.11 gears and that makes it easier to get rolling.
