My father and I are looking at a '00 NHRA bird. (Big woop...)

Well, we took it out for a test drive... and on the way we stopped at a service shop to put it up on the rack. I am kinda disheartened to see a oil leak comming from the back of the block.

We are thinking it is either oil-pan leak (oil pan was seal on with silicon... not an OEM gasket), rear-main, or possibly the filter, each of which is a relatively inexpensive fix.

Can anyone think of something worse it might be...?

Motor runs strong... car has 97k miles and is a 6-speed.

Wasn't able to pin-point location due to the fact that the oil is everywhere.

Could be a few things...

Oil pan is a possibility...could be a rear main seal leak...someone could have installed a clutch and screwed up the pilot bearing, causing it to leak through there...

hmmm...

A clutch was installed earlier this week.

pilot bushing was replaced... but i will put that on the check list.

Behind the pilot is a freeze plug that plugs up a hole in the crank. If you try and remove the pilot bearing with the old school bread/wet toilet paper trick, or otherwise move the freeze plug from its spot, it will cause a leak.

i dont like the thought of something leaking from a car anyways...before you buy it...your buying a problem child

Alright... Its fixed. Mechanics error. When he did the clutch, we also had him replace the rear main. He crimped it wrong when putting in the new one, so after inspection, it was again replaced, and properly this time. No more leak...
