Default To stroke or not to stroke?

Ok guys, here is the deal. I am assembling a new motor from a fresh bare ls1 block from TSP. I have been modding my car for 3 year now, and it's time to take the plunge and build a new engine. I have not purchased internals yet. I was dead set on buying the eagle 383 forged set-up. After doing some research though, it seems like most people discourage investing the extra cash to go 383. The overall goal for this car is to be about the nastiest DD it can be. I want a mid 10 second car, maybe quicker if possible. I kinda had the TSP stg 2.5 LS6 heads in mind, maybe combined with the MS4 or something similar in size, along with a 90/90 combo to take advantage of the extra cubes. I have a stall TC so low-midrange power isn't really a concern lol I'm not exactly on a budget, but building a turbo setup is out of the question. I am not against spraying a 200 shot on top of the NA combo. Either way I go with CI, the thing will be forged with a CR of around 11.0:1. Can someone point me in the right direction to attain my goals, or at least give me a thumbs up or down on the stroker idea? Keep in mind this is my very first engine build from scratch. I'm building the engine with a new block so I can take my time on putting it all together and choosing the right parts. I was quoted about 400-500 bucks to machine the block and balance everything for the 383. Thanks in advance.

Jeremy

There's no replacement for displacement. Go big or go home. etc...

Do the stroker!

thanks. It's hard to find any concrete info one way or another on a NA 383. Most of the threads I found concerning 383's were going to be FI, which is a totally different ball-park from NA.

I think that you can just get the 382 rotating assembly and have it balanced and installed without really even touching the block.

I would get a cam spec'd out and custom ground before I went with an off the shelf grind on an all out but streetable car.

have you already purchased a block ? if not you could get an ls2 block for 402 cubes. if you already have the block i would definitely make it a 383.you definitely won't regret it.

Go 383, I did and I'm very happy! Just needs a FAST 90/90 set-up so it can breath!

the extra cubes are very helpful for getting into the 10s on a daily driver. However if 10 seconds includes spraying, the extra cubes are not needed. Having the torque, even with a stall is nice.

slow trap, the block is sitting in my room on a stand, so I believe it's too late to go with the 402. haha I sent Predator-Z a pm asking what kind of custom cam would work best for this setup. I think something close to you 242/248 or something close would work good. What would you suggest? Like I said before, the heads will probably be the PRC 2.5 LS6 with the 2.04/1.6 valves.

My 385 is created with off the shelf parts in the rotating assembly and makes killer power n/a.

So far I'm very happy with my TSP 383. Best time so far is 11.11 @ 122mph. That is with stock 853 heads and LS6 intake. I know the heads are killing me....but it's running OK for now.

right on. I bet that thing would run mid-low 10's for sure with some heads and a 90/90. lol Thanks for providing more motivation to get this project finished

i really like the 244/248 in my motor,it peaks around 6k with peak tq around 4,800 or so.i don't know where it would peak at on a 383.pred z will definately be able to help with a cam pick.how bout something like a 238/242 on xer lobes ? just figure out what cc head you are going to get and head gasket thickness and then figure out what cc dish you will need to get a high enough scr/dcr.i would try and get dcr up over 8.5 and it should be a decent combo.

Predator-z suggested something along the lines of 243/248 .653/.610 112+4. So we'd be pretty close I suppose. lol

that should be a strong performer. it seems like the lsk lobes gain quite a bit of power compared to an xer lobe.

i dont get why you are even building a motor.. but a stroker motor will cost you about 3k more than a stock motor.

if it was me id use a 6.0 cast block, stock crank, forged pistons and H or I beam rods.

When people ask why I'm building this, I'm likely to respond with "why not." The big reason I'm building a new engine at all is because mine has about 145K on it. Nothing wrong with high mileage LS1's, and mine isn't showing any signs of wearing out, but I wouldn't feel too comfortable putting any more power in the engine as it is(H/C/spray/etc...). I'm not using my block in the car because the block from TSP was only 600 bucks, so it just made sense to build outside of the car, because everything else is new anyway. Having a fresh block outside the car means a lot less downtime for me. I can take my time making sure everything is as close to perfect as it can be, which is very important to me.

I just put a 236/236 .651/.651 lsk lobe cam in my car. Along with afr 205's and port matched 90mm intake. I'm hoping for great results.
