Default Cam Mileage

Would I be naive to think that a cam without any overlap, such as a 224/224 with 112LSA, would not decrease my fuel mileage? The justification being that since there is no overlap, no air/fuel mix will be sucked out the exhaust before combustion.

i used to have that cam in my car, i still got 16-18 mpg city if i drove nice, my new cam is much larger and i still get just as good gas mileage, however if i put my foot on the loud pedal constantly on a tank of gas, i've had it as low as 7 mpg too

I'm worried mostly about highway mileage. As I see it, the only way highway mileage would get worst with a cam would be: a) if gas was sucked out the exhaust before combustion due to a large intake/exhaust overlap (as I stated above) or: b) if the large cam allowed too much gas into the cylinder, causing it to not burn completely and efficiently.

Can anyone verify/disprove my theory that any cam without overlap will not decrease highway fuel mileage?
