Default 0w-30 why is everyone using this?

sorry i didnt know where to post this .. but since it does go in the internal engine.. i felt it might go here..

but why is everyone using this GC 0w-30 oil? i mean this is a really thin oil.. my 98 Z28 camaro suggests 10w-30 from the factory..

wont this mess with bearing tolerances? are you guys using it because it gives a slightly higher HP rating on the dyno? I cant imagine using this thin oil in the summer time with 95* heat... and then racing on it.. just seems too thin for my liking and i was wondering why people are drawn to using it.

Seemed thicker than the Mobil 1 5W-30 that I normally use. Cut down on some smoking the car was having. I've since fixed the smoke issue (put sealant on the rocker arm bolts).

It's not a thinner oil. It actually measures as a thick 30 weight at operating temperture versus Mobil-1 which registers as a thin 30 weight at operating temp. Basically, you need to not focus on the "0w" part unless you are starting your car in extreme cold temps.

if youve tried using 5-40 in a ford focus you would know why the 0-30 is required, without it the lifters pump up and the engine stall... for a v8.. i doubt it makes a difference

The manual is not up to date on the latest in oil technology.

I love that oil. I get better oil pressure then with M1 5W40. I used to burn M1 like it was nothing. I now burn wayyyy less oil with European Castrol 0W30.

Auto Zone, 0W30 Syntec is good.

However, don't dismis M1 5w30 or Royal purple oil, contrary to popular belief. I've had both analyzed, worked just well as GC, no sheering probelms either.

The only factors I noticed with M1 5w30

-didn't have as much Zinc or sulpher, more or less better for catalytic converters and oxygen sensor life.

-Contained Molybdenum, GC had 0 moly.

-TBN was at 4.5 w/ M1 TBN w/ GC 0w30 was still 7.5 after 3000 miles

-Mobil1 didn't sheer at all.

-Royal Purple has over 1000ppm zinc and sulpher and 100ppm Molybdenum, not as bad of an oil as (some) people make it out to be.

Mobil 1 after 3K miles usually registers sub 10.0 CST at 100C. That is all but 20-weight. 0-30 GC normally comes in at 12.0 @100*C.

odd.. so its viscosity is thicker than Mobile 1 5w-30?? really? thats interesting..

but would any of you race on this GC 0w-30, road race or drag?

for road racing.. i have used 15w-50 and sometimes 20w-50 if the air temps are above 90* (which makes track temps in the 140+ range)

but for winter and normal driving i have been using the 10w-30 Mobile Sythetic and have never seen pressure increases or drops.. my idle pressure is about 55psi,, and ***** out is 75psi.. no matter what oil is in there.. and as far as i know, this is the original oil pump.. i cant see any signs at all of the engine cover or any other part being removed...

0-30 GC will hold up better under heat.

Those guys are all correct. The only time mobil 10w30 is thicker than GC is if you redline your motor upon freezing startup.
