Guys with high hp turbo cars. What converter are YOU happy with. I'm currently using a Coan but it's not working well. I'm thinking of a Chance or a PTC. Please guys if you have a 400hp car don't respond, I don't want to make another $1000 + mistake. Thanks!!!

Unlucky you are lol, I just sold a TH400 10" chance I bought when I was going to go big single last year..

I love the ATI in this car but we really couldnt get together on a turbo converter, their idea was a little different then what I wanted so I bought a chance.

But the B&M super holeshot is always a choice I guess

Because they also told me to run a 4.11 or 4.30 gear. lol. I also don't know of anyone with a turbo running one with any success. I really don't like dealing with them.

I know the feeling, did you tell them you were running a 32 inch tall tire? lol If I had the money id have a chance bolt together and even if I changed things up the converter could be serviced to be right.

I thought long and hard about going with a PTC, but took a chance on re-stalling my Vigilante. They replaced my 9.5" with a 10.5" and it works very well. It flashes to about 4400 at 17 psi boost on my 388. I think it's just under 10% slip, but as we all know, slip has alot to do with gear ratio, mph, and rpm at the traps.

I "like" my PYE 3400, its only got 5% slip at 6400rpm. But its just too tight off the line. I can only get 2500 rpm on the line before it pushes the car. The shift extention is perfect though... So, its a tough call. I ran my 10 flat with a 1.65 short time, LOL.

who do you talk to when you called there? I deal with Craig he is very very knowledgable, im sure they would work with you to get it right...
they also have a new 2 piece converter that is amazing!

I'm running a neil chance bolt together converter in mine. Rossler recomended chance and i've never had a problem with the converter.

andy, you will have big slippage when running a small gear.
even in na motors that is the case......

Why? Most people I've talked to that are running a chance are running about 6% slippage?

Gear ratio has a drastic affect on torque converter slip. Check your slip at the bottom of 3rd gear and then again at the top of 3rd gear and you'll see what I mean. It goes from ~30% down to ~10%.

Um, thats called shift extention... a converter has more slip at lower rpm, without shift extention you would have no torque multiplying effect on the shift, and the engine would drag down out of the power band.

And the issue with them saying you need taller gears is a missunderstanding with the tech. What they are used to seeing is people running a much taller tire. So, the real isssue is not rear axle ratio, it should be final drive ratio that is going to affect the way the converter leaves the line. If you stepped the rear ratio up to 4.11's the converter is going to "act" tighter, but you're not going to have enough RPM at the big end. The lower (numerically) the gear ratio, the looser its going to feel.

thats what im saying, no matter what converter you get with the real small ratio its gonna "slip" . even on my na motor going from a 3.73 to a 4.30 made a huge diffrence in slip.

andy what do you rev the motor to? and what rear gear do you have?
