Use Lavasoft Ad-aware. It's free and one of the best. www.lavasoft.com

I use Adware you can download the free personal copy. They also have another program that you can run which takes care of the background events and stops all registry edits while surfing. Keeps your comp fast and clean.

Point of advice: don't screw with the registry unless you know a little. If there is something that you are unsure about, leave it alone.

No offense, but Norton is a total waste. Windows stuff is actually better *ducks*. Norton takes over your computer, my wife was stupid and put it on her computer, just sit and watch the CCAPP.EXE process and see the resources it hogs, it was almost 100% of the time for quite a bit! And she wonders why her computer is slow!

I use nothing! Haven't had a virus scanner in years. My Linux box is my internet. Good filter. I still get adware though. But use that Ad-Aware about 2 times a week and you'll be good in that sense. Of use it after you go to some non familiar websites. And as far as viruses, if you don't know what it is or it looks funny, don't open it.

As Splitz stated, Norton and McAfee are a resource hog and take over. You can have network problems, internet problems, printer problems after you install one of those because it might look a little funny to it and block it.
