Default 2003 Chevy Cavalier rack & pinion

I've got about 1/2" of rotational free-play in my steering wheel. In other words, I can turn the steering wheel left-right about 1/2" before any movement gets transmitted to the front wheels. I've had the rack replaced twice (2 different shops) and there's no change. The odd thing is that when the car is cold--in the morning--there is ZERO free play in the steering. As the car becomes thoroughly warmed up (25 or more miles driven), the steering gets looser and looser until it maxes out at about a half inch of rotation with no resistance whatsoever. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.
