Question Speed Inc RGR Heads or Patriot STG 3 LS6

Looking to do heads on my car what would produce better ET gains for the 1/4? The RGR STG 2 heads sold by speed inc or something like a Patriot STG 2 or 3 LS6 head (243 casting)? Thanks for any advise.

I have speed inc stage/rgr stage one ls6 heads on my car. They have the stock valves. They flow about 300 cfm at .550 lift. I have a comp xer cam. 230/232 on 112 lsa +2. I make 413 rwhp and 380 rwtq. This is thru a A4 with stell driveshat W 9 inch with a spool. I had a 4400 stall and went 11.27 et at 119mph. Great heads. I'm taking them off to put ETP 225's on the car.

no the heads are reg LS1, but in his case he had a set of true Z06/243 casting done.

if you can get them cheap just grab them as I told you...the car will rock.

otherwise if close to the price of new Patriots then go that route. This way you know you have a fresh set of springs. The heads are both very similar in HP...give or take a few.

Well thing is I have someone who offered me a set of RGR STG 2 heads for CHEAP. But I have heard the 243 is a far superior head no matter what is done to a 241 so hense the question buy the RGR from this guy or I can get a set of 243' s for around the same price and have them ported. Just lookin for the best bang for the buck but also good gains.

What are your goals and hw much $$ you want to spend? You may want to look into AFR's, ETP's or TFS's. With heads you get what you pay for. No doubt, the Patriots and other GM casting heads have their place. They are truely a "budget" head. I started by considering that route, but decided that the TrickFlows were the way to go. They leave the door open for future mods as well.

a good port job on 853 or 241 is just as good as a good port job on 243s. Don't buy into the hype

Glad to here some one say it. It is a chunk of aluminum and if you can make it identical to a 243 or better.

This is interesting to hear I dont want to spend a lot of $$ on heads because I'm also redoing the tranny so I have to keep a budget. I would like to see at least 5 tenths out of a set of whatever heads I do. Any one else have any good info or exp on this matter?

We know you are on a budget and the reason I did not suggest an aftermarket casting as stated by others above.

I think with your current cam and the bit larger stall with either the RGR or very well priced Patriot you will get your bang for the buck.

as mentioned though if the RGR's have original springs and need them along with labor you may want to go Patriot with fresh new duals...unless you are getting the RGR's for very cheap.

email me if you have nay other questions Rodney

Our CNC ported 243 heads would be a good choice. You will see great gains and like Larry said, you can't beat the the value a set of our heads offer.

Agreed & quoted for truth. Even the '98 heads ported and with aftermarket valves can perform similar to the 243 heads. A lot of the differences in port shape from the LS6 heads can be duplicated on the LS1 heads- such as the improved LS6 bowls.

You can't make it identical as the 243s have a much improved short side radius, but you can come close with a LS1, and in some cases surpass a LS6 head depending on the port work.

Yes, in several ways, but... not exactly by a landslide

You can be the judge, the two graphs are of almost identical combo's with LS6 intakes, the red line is our 5.3 Stg 1.5 heads and the blue line is our 243 Stg 2 heads. A properly ported LS6 head will spank any LS1, problem is, few people know how to make big power with LS6 heads.

Sorry to hijack, I'm sure you will make good power with either one you chose.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention (besides volume) the big differences in the chamber redesign of the revised GM LS6 heads. Which is certainly worth mentioning.
