Default T56 corvette question

I am hoping somebody could help explain to me how the c5's and c6's can have the shifter in the console of the car, but have the trans in the rear. If there are any pictures of how the linkage is set up, i would really like to see it.

Also, i was wondering if i could get a t56 from a mustang or a 93-97 f-body and make it work with an ls1. are there more differences than just the bell housing?

The corvette T56 has the shift linkange comming out the front of the box. This works because the clutch is up at the engine and not in the way. There are more differences in the Ford/ 93-97 T56s than just bells. Input gears ,front adapters ,shifter position and shifter pattern, mounts ,speedo, ratios, input splines,& prolly more.
