Heads & Cam Swap Parts List?
Not getting anything but Error 503 out of the search so I'll have
to just ask....
Got a heads & cam swap going to happen next month, and want
to get the consumables / parts together for it. I see a pretty
minimal list of stuff needed on ls1howto.com:
Head gaskets (some confusion here, '06 243s onto '02 block,
is GM 12498544 right?). My primary concern is durability, and I
don't want any additional compression ratio. I'd take a thicker
gasket if it had durability benefits, but don't know anything
to distinguish the various options.
Head bolts - leaning toward ARP bolts, I want something stout,
reusable and good for a 100 shot on top of the higher CR.
Concerned that studs won't let me slide the heads on under
the F-body cowl since I'm not going to drop the motor. True,
or can I use studs OK? Do studs provide a significant benefit
to a 224/224 range cam, LS2 heads, mild N2O type combo
or are they way overkill?
Gaskets - mention of water pump only for '97-'98'; do I need
water pump gaskets? Other gaskets? Smog stuff is gone.
Front engine seal GM 12561244? Any others? Seems like I'm
getting off light here.
This just seems like too short a list. I plan to get a LS2 timing
chain and that's about it. What am I missing? Conversely are
there things that often come in a "kit" which are not needed?
I figure I'll get the stuff in a bundle from SDPC but want to
shop wisely and not have a Sunday afternoon surprise when
all the parts counters are closed.
to just ask....

When I did my cam I went through TSP. I bought the cam and gasket kit, LS2 chain, and ported LS6 oil pump. I see you're doing heads also, good choice. I had a really good experience with TSP, great customer service and they answered all of my questions. Give them a look/call they will set you up with everything you need. And since you're getting heads you'll probably have them assembled already so you won't need a special valve spring compression tool. But I would look into a tool to keep the lifters in place. I have the JRP tool, but you can figure out other things to use if need be. I didn't feel like taking the chance that my lifters were supposed to stay in place.
