Cam wont go in!
I was really paranoid when i was putting the rods in the holes to support the lifters because when I would spin the cam to get them up, the ones on the pass side seems to not want to stay up but the dowls were going in pretty smoothly . Will the pushrods still move a little with the dowls in when you spin the cam?
Got the cam out and now putting new one back in but seems to not want to get past the first journal. Its not budging.

yes, the dowls are all the way in. rockers off, rods out and the lifters are all seated. However, i looked in to the motor and can see the # 4 cylinders lifters seem to be lower than the others but they will only come up a little when I put a magnet on them.
I can get the cam in all the way to what I think is the first journal. like I said I looked inside the motor and it only looks like only the lifters are a little low. Meaning they stick down a few mm lower than the others.

i just took it out again and looked inside. It's past the first journal but I can see those two lifters again and well, theres red on them. Like that dot on the cam is rubbing them. How could these be lower than the others?

I don't think it has anything to do with the lifters. If they weren't secure already, they would have fallen into your oil pan by now. Lube up the cam very well, and just let it slide in. Check your angle cause the motor is not level with the body so what you might think is strait may not be. Go slow and DO NOT PUSH, if you nick a bearing you'll be in trouble... GL

You need to understand the rods don't hold up the lifters, they only prevent them from falling. Your lifter trays are worn to the point that the lifters won't stay up high enough to insert the cam. There are two options. You can go into the motor with a clean wooden rod and push each lifter up high and see if they will stay up. If that doesn't work, get some magnets to hold up the offending lifers.
No amount of oil on the cam will get it in if the lifters are too low, you need to correct this. Take your time and think it out.
What ever you do, don't remove the rods!!!!!

OR you didnt spin the cam hard enough to throw the lifters out of the way and were lucky to get the cam out in the first place.

Okay, it the exhaust lifter in #4 being a bitch. We tried the magnet on it for lke 45 minutesd and then finally got past it. Got cam in, and them the oil pump was a PITA too. took me another hour and ahalf to get it dropped. Didnt realize I had to loosen those two tranny bolts in the back. Oil pump is off, now I need to put the new double roller timing set on and I can start putting the engine back together and working on the springs. The real fun begins!
How do I get the crank gear off for the timing chain? Pulley puller?
