Default Melling Pump, Rollmaster Double = Hits Timing Chain Cover...

Have the Melling pump and the rollmaster double roller. have to use the spacers so the pump doesn't hit the timing chain. even wth the spacers, need to grind on it a bit.

now the problem, the body of the pump, hits my timing chain cover.

anyone else had this?

anyone else grind the body of the pump...???

Somethings clearly wrong in both directions. You sure you've got it installed correctly? I've used a few of these without issues yet yours is wrong, both ways? Could be an issue for Melling if nobody else can offer help.]

i have only had to clearance t/c covers on '98 motor, it's fine if you have to, but take as little off the cover as you need to get the clearance. make sure you use the bolts that rollermaster sent with the timing set for the oil pump too.

i know the crank gear is on all the way.... it's gotten tapped in as far as it can go. i'm using the spacers supplied by rollmaster, and using the bolts supplied by melling. so i'm running down the checkoff lists but it still hits. the front of the pump, hits that gasket area for the crank seal. not anywhere else. that little flange that sticks out where the crank seal gets pushed in from the front.

the part numbers for the timing chain covers are all the same i thought for all the years...

Its a common problem. Just grind down the inside of the cover where it hits. I used a sharpie to paint the area and then ground down where the paint is scratched.

ok, so where it hits, it's about .040 thick...

it's where the crankseal is, so i can't just "grind" it away, otherwise there would be nothing there to stop the crank seal from collapsing inwards.

it's hitting that raised portion that encompasses the crank seal. no where else.

hmm mine only hit on the bolts of the oil pump. It was about2 or 3 inches away from the seal. I have a melling pump and rollmaster double. Maybe a shim missing to make it sit crooked? Just a thought. I was concerned about thickness but didnt have any issue. but It sounds like you hitting in a different spot. Makes me wonder if everything is seated properly. Best of luck with it !

there's not even 2-3 inches of space in there. that's the parts thats baffeling.

we've pounded on the crank gear to get it on, it looks like because i'm using the shims for the oil pump, that is where the problem lies. it's exactly that distance that needs to be removed. if i use a stock ported LS6 pump on there, then it fits fine with the shims.

I have had this issue come up on a bunch of setups. You need to clearance the front cover or mill the oil pump housing cover down flat and use allen headed bolts for the pump cover. Also, make sure the chain is not rubbing on the oil pump where the oil pump pick-up bolts to. I have had to clearance there slightly as well.

Your hating life right now. I had LME throw the oil pump and timing set on there when they did the short block but I had to grind the cover to get it to fit. And it only hit on the 4 or 5 bolts that hold the pump together wich hit on the outer edges of the round part of the cover

why do you think it happens on some but not others Jason?

but that's exactly the answer I was looking for. it's only where the seal hits the pump. and we were planning on milling, but wanted to make sure i'm not messing it up too much.

we've already clearanced the back part by just a tiny bit. and that's where it seems most guys are(like the SLP pump coming pre-ground) grinding on.

yeah i am, haha

mine is perfectly fine at that point. those bolts you circled on that pic(which helps greatly by the way, thanks!) are in the recessed area of the timing cover, so they won't be hitting.

I'm not sure, but I can tell you everyone I have done needed to be clearanced. I don't even check anymore, just grind/mill and I know I won't have any issues!

Are you test fitting the cover without the gasket? The gasket will help a bit.

I know exactly what youre talking about. I tried installing a mlling along with a double roller and the melling is just to big, you have to either ditch the pump or double roller, or get an OEM type pump and it will work.

No need to ditch anything it just needs a little massaging.
